Reports of the death of the Veronica Mars movie have been greatly exaggerated says show creator Rob Thomas.  After its cancellation in 2007, fans have been clamoring to see a new mystery for the sardonic detective (played by Kristen Bell) to solve.  A film version was believed to be dead after Bell said there was a script but Thomas denied it.  Thomas has now clarified the situation to EW and says there was a treatment that he took to Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver, but the studio said there wasn’t enough awareness of the property to give a greenlight.  However, Thomas says he’s still looking for a way to make the movie.

Hit the jump for Thomas’ comments on the built-in expiration date for the project and why I think this movie shouldn’t be so difficult to make.

veronica_mars_kristen_bell__2_.jpgHere’s what Thomas had to say about the ticking clock on a Mars movie:

“There is a bit of a ticking clock [because] Kristen Bell does continue to age,” he concedes of his 29-year-old leading lady. “And doing ‘teen detective’ [is a] dicey proposition. But frankly, I think Veronica Mars as a 30-year-old noir detective at some point in the future would still be interesting to me.

First, let me say that it’s a major revelation that Kristen Bell continues to age.  Secondly, I don’t know why Thomas would even consider going towards “teen detective,” especially when his pitch for a fourth season of the show would have had Veronica as an FBI agent.

But I love the idea of Bell (who, to her credit, does not look anywhere near 29), playing a noir detective.  It suits the character’s prickly personality and the dark storylines Thomas was willing to pursue during the show’s run.  I also don’t think that kind of movie would have a large price tag.  Bell’s latest movie, When in Rome, racked up $32 million domestic and I think her appeal combined with the pitch of a hot, jaded detective would sell to those who have never seen the show.

I do have one request of the movie: Thomas has to bring back Jason Dohring and Enrico Colantoni.  They’re too great.

  1. Yes YOU CAN Rob Thomas, we want this freaking movie with Kbell obviously but also Jason Dohring and Enrico Colantoni !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. I hope this movie gets made since they left us all hanging at the end when the show was cut short last minute and Veronica Mars is my all-time favorite show. I also really enjoyed the season 4 pitch episode, and would appreciate the character even more to see her grow up and face new challenges. Of course I totally agree, it cannot be made without Dohring and Colantoni. Wake up Hollywood!

    • everyone if you really love veronica mars and want there to be a movie and or fourth season we need to do something about it we should all like veronica mars on facebook and say if we get half a million(500,00) likes we should talk to warner bros. and everyone else envolved with producing this show and say that people do like the show and that it should have never in a million years been cancelled..there is plenty of funding money to do either a 4th season or a movie(hopefully more than one movie)….they owe it to us VM fans after it got cancelled after 3 seasons and never got any answers to our questions such as-are veronica and logan gonna get back together!? :) -who really killed lilly?!-what happened to Aaron Echolls?-is Kendall Casablances really dead?- will keith ever win a sheriff election?-will veronica make it as an FBI agent? Rob Thomas i am reaching out to you and all the veronica mars fans to help make this happen we are all on board, as you can see from previous comments….and i gotta say when i found out that veronica mars was cancelled i cried on and off for 2 months hoping no one would notice my tears….i love the show. :’)

  4. I really dig on the show- it's smart, sassy and far too clever by half. And oh so amazing. The fans would come out and watch a feature! Kristen Bell is just mesmerizing and fun to watch, I would agree Dohring and Colantoni need absolutely need to be a part of the movie. They are my favourite Veronica Mars' leading men. Here's to holding out hope…

  5. A Veronica Mars movie without Keith Mars or Logan wouldn't be a Veronica Mars movie! I still miss dearly Kristin Bell, Jason Dohring and Enrico Colantoni work!!! Not having it on TV regularly still doesn't feel right to me!

  6. A Veronica Mars movie without Keith Mars or Logan wouldn't be a Veronica Mars movie! I still miss dearly Kristin Bell, Jason Dohring and Enrico Colantoni work!!! Not having it on TV regularly still doesn't feel right to me!

  7. I would love for there to be a Veronica Mars movie and I agree that Jason Dohring and Enrico Colantoni should be in it but I would be happy if with Jason Dohring. Also, it wouldn't really be a teen detective movie because at the end of season three Veronica was nineteen and there was less than six months until her next birthday.

  8. We need closure. Firefly did it with Serenity, you need to do this. Give us something, that last episode is a ridiculas way to leave everything.

    Please and thank you.

  9. I would love to see a movie on Veronica Mars and catch up on what happened to all the story lines that never got finished.

  10. We need this movie! I was so disappointed when I found out that a 4th season was not going to be done but we need some kind of closure for this. Kristen Bell and Jason Dohring are a must for the movie.

  11. cmon we need a movie fast! and yes it has to have Jason Dohring and Enrico! A movie without Logan Echolls won’t be a VM movie :|
And the fact that people are still writing comments for this article months after it was published speaks volumes :P

  12. I know its 2010 veronica mars was freakin awesome!!! we want to know what happens next. i know rob can pull it off. everybody stilll looks awesome in 2010 it could work just think about it ROB. VERONICA MARS, VERONICA MARS….!!!!!!

  13. I`ve just watched all 3 seasons of Veronaica Mars and I would realy like Veronica Mars movie to see how it ends, because there is no proper ending in season 3. I just want to say that I think that this is a very good TV series, because I j ust couldn`t stop watching it. In my opinion it is so good, because in each episode it connects two stories one detective, mystery and one love, romantic. And I just love Veronica and Logan together!!!!!
So I want Veronica Mars movie!!!!!!!
