The existence of the Veronica Mars movie was an achievement.  I doubt we'll see another one, but the Kickstarted picture was nice for fans who had been waiting a decade for the return of the acerbic private detective.  However, the show will return in a new form…kind of.  Creator Rob Thomas is launching the web series Play It Again, Dick, which will star Ryan Hansen, who played Dick Casablancas on Veronica Mars.  But rather than retool the show into a spin-off intended for computer screens, Thomas is going into the self-parody route, and the web series will have more with his other cult-hit show, Party Down.

As Hitfix reported back in January, "The web series will have more in common with Party Down tonally, but it will be about Ryan Hansen, or at least a version of Ryan Hansen, deciding to capitalize on the current Veronica Mars heat to get his own series on the air. He’ll try to pull his actor pals into the venture with varying degrees of success."

Now that the eight-episode series has wrapped, BuzzFeed has revealed that a majority of the Veronica Mars cast will be joining Hansen, and most be doing so as both their Veronica Mars characters and as self-parodies.

Kristen Bell, Jason Dohring, Enrico Colantoni, Percy Daggs III, Daran Norris, Francis Capra, Kyle Gallner, Christopher B. Duncan, and Ryan Devlin (per BuzzFeed: "No, that’s not a typo: Devlin, who played rapist Mercer Hayes in the third season, returns to replace Teddy Dunn as Veronica’s former paramour Duncan Kane in Hansen’s ridiculously bizarre detective series.") will all reprise their Veronica Mars roles but also play versions of themselves.

Furthermore, Chris Lowell and Ken Marino will return, but only as themselves as opposed to Piz and Vinnie Van Lowe, respectively.  Veronica Mars cast-members Amanda Noret and Lisa Thornhill will return, but only as their Veronica Mars characters (I'm sure this will make far more sense once the series airs).  Finally, the show will also include non-Veronica Mars alum.   Rob Thomas' iZombie stars Robert Buckley and Rose McIver will also be on the series alongside Wesley Chan, Philip Wang, and Chris Dinh, as well as Mark Pedowitz, president of The CW, and Thom Sherman, The CW’s head of development.

Play It Again, Dick will premiere the week of September 15th on the CW's digital-only network, CWSeed.
