Rumor: Could Viggo Mortensen Appear as Dr. Strange in THOR: THE DARK WORLD?

     September 10, 2012

It’s rumor time!  As Marvel Studios launches further into “Phase Two” of their film slate, we’re likely to be vetting quite a few rumors over the next few years.  While most of these turn out to be false (look over the long road to The Avengers), a few here and there are solid.  A rather tantalizing rumor has now surfaced with regards to director Alan Taylor’s (Game of Thrones) sequel Thor: The Dark World, and we figured it was worth sharing.

Production on that film is currently underway in London and we already know that Christopher Eccleston is onboard as villain Malekith the Accursed, but now murmurs are making their way around the interwebs that Thor: The Dark World could also see an appearance from another major Marvel character: Dr. Strange.  Hit the jump for more.

viggo-mortensen-thor-2-the-dark-worldA Twitter account by the name of Roger Wardell, who has previously leaked information about Falcon appearing in Captain America 2 and Sebastian Stan returning as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier well in advance of official word, has recently dropped two tidbits that lead to this Dr. Strange rumor:

“Inside News: There’s something “Strange” about Thor: The Dark World”

“Inside News: Marvel is negotiations with Viggo Mortensen for an unspecified role in one of their Phase 2 films”

The folks over at Screen Rant connected the dots and proposed that Mortensen may in fact be the actor that Marvel is lining up for the Dr. Strange role, with further speculation via The Playlist.  The studio has been developing an independent Dr. Strange feature for a few years, with Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer tapped to write the script back in the summer of 2010.  Though Marvel has a full slate of films leading up to the 2015 release of The Avengers 2, it would certainly make sense to introduce the Dr. Strange character in one of these Phase Two films before he gets his own movie in the inevitable Phase Three.

Marvel is letting their space flag fly with Guardians of the Galaxy and early word is that Thor: The Dark World will spend less time on Earth than the first film, so it wouldn’t be a shock to see the mystical Dr. Strange character to come to the forefront sooner or later.

It’s important to remember that neither Dr. Strange’s appearance nor Mortensen’s involvement have been confirmed, so it’s entirely possible that one or both of these rumors may not pan out.  For now we’ll just have to wait and see what the coming months bring us, but I’m sure we won’t be short of other Marvel rumors in the meantime.

Well, thats some fantastic news. I really hope that this all works out for those involved, because the real winner in this deal will be the fans. Viggo is a very good actor, and picking him as strange is as perfect as Marvel picking the other actors forn the other Avengers. Now, all we need to hear is that the supposed Ant-Man cameo in Iron Man 3 is real.

I have to admit Dr Strange sounds pretty cool. . . . . .but only if played by Patrick Dempsey.

Maybe its because he’s known for playing a Neuro-Surgeon for so long on Grey’s Anatomy, but having him play Strange just seemed like a good fit. I get that everyone’s trying to get serious / oscar calibre actors to play superheroes now, but as comparing Edward Norton & Mark Ruffalo as Hulk shows us: even serious, damn good actors can seem ill fit to carry a particular, beloved role.

I think Aragon is more than enough for Viggo. Let some other, little known actor blow us away with this one.

LMFAO HAHHAHAHAHAHAAAA, what?! … like, what?!

HA HA HA HA HA HA . .. . wait, what are we laughing at?

Dempsey already looks the part, has a built in fan base, and would draw in a female audience unlike any other comic book actor not named RDJ.

Come on, Griz. Seriously? Has hanging with Tracy Jordan rotted your brain so much that u just go full retard at a moments notice? U want Mcdreamy (or whatever his name is, sure u know) to play Strange just because he looks like the character? U don’t think Viggo is a good choice but a tv doctor on a CHICKS show is a waaaay better one cause he looks like him. Viggo MURDERS Mcdreamy in that role. I was just wait for u to say Mcdreamy has more swag. Ugh. Go hang with Dotcom and get yo education, son.

. . .sigh . . . You want me to say it? fine: Viggo would suck as Dr Strange. And this from a huge LOTR fan. I just don’t think he can sell the “Pre-super powered” part of Strange. I’ve seen plenty of his movies (all great) but he always plays the low key, deep voiced, brooding hero. . . .Actors playing non-noir comic book characters like Strange need more flamboyance in their personality to 1) make us like their pre-superpowered persona, and 2) make us care for the weight of their responsibilities when faced with hard choices. Viggo would make a great noir hero like Jackie Estacado, the next Bruce Wayne or even a great comic book villain . . . but Dr Strange? As good an actor as he is, his expertise doesn’t match what’s required (same goes for Depp, who someone mentioned below), unless they change the Stephen Strange characterization to match the actor . . . .then that’s a completely diff problem. Personally, if Hugh Jackman wasn’t already taken, i’d say he’d be great, but he’s out of the picture. And speaking of Depp, I think his Lone Ranger costar Armie Hammer would be great as pre-superpowered Stephen Strange. . . .as for the super-powered version, that depends on strength of the visuals.

Sweet. There could definitely be a crossover involving Dormammu in the “Dark World”.

  • brNdon

Patrick Dempsey? Are you serious? He doesn’t have what it takes to bring Dr. Strange to life. Even at his age, he is still too much of a boy. Viggo has that older, wiser, experienced look and acting style that would do Dr. Strange serious justice.

Heard a RUMOR that someone said we’re wack. I think that it’s wack to call someone wack.

  • Elitist Prick

I never considered him for Doctor Strange, but upon hearing the suggestion, my response is \"fuck yes, make it happen!\" Strange could even be a Nick Fury-type character for the future of the Marvel brand in movies; one that connects various franchises or stories together to help create a cohesive universe. In any case, the character is great fodder for film and Viggo is an excellent actor, so even seeing the two paired in one movie would be a treat.

  • wacko3205

To say that I take offense to someone use “wack” as offensive slant…well…that’s just MFN wack!!!

That being said…Viggo would be an amazing pick for the role of Stephen Strange. The guy has some serious chops & a larger than life big screen presence.

Not to issue a slap…but Dempsey’s way out of class for Strange, he’s to pretty & too young in appearance. Viggo’s got the stress lines & years to his face.

    Great choice if its legit.

you needed screenrant to put together the dots for you? LMAOOOOOOO

    nice joke.

I always imagined Viggo as Dr. Strang. The only other actors I think can pull it off are Johnny Depp, Liam Neeson, and Jimmy Smits.

obviously like your web site but you have to test the spelling on several of your posts. Several of them are rife with spelling problems and I find it very bothersome to tell the truth on the other hand I’ll definitely come back again.
