Viggo Mortensen is a “Person of Interest” for General Zod in Zack Snyder’s SUPERMAN Reboot

While most of you know that Henry Cavill has already been cast as the iconic hero, the remaining roles for director Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot have yet to be filled. We know that Lois Lane will indeed be in the film, but aren’t sure which actresses Snyder and producer Christopher Nolan have in mind. Also, recent reports have named Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent, Clark Kent’s adoptive father.

The villainous front is a little more defined as we’re fairly certain that Kryptonian badass Ursa will feature prominently.  And now, we’re hearing reports that Snyder and Nolan are interested in Viggo Mortensen to play the major villain General Zod!  Hit the jump for more:

General zod-daily planet supermanWhat would the vindictive Ursa and the lumbering Non be without the evil genius of General Zod? According to THR, Mortensen is a “person of interest” to portray the leader of the Kryptonian trio.

Meanwhile, Mortensen is currently engaged in talks to play the role of the huntsman in Snow White and the Huntsman. If those negotiations fall through, Mortensen’s schedule could open up to allow filming for Superman, which begins shooting later this year. Then again, if Viggo wants the role badly enough, Universal and Warner Bros. could work out a way to allow him to film both.

Owing to the tentpole nature of this franchise, and the fact that Snyder’s and Nolan’s names are attached to it, any role in the reboot is a hot commodity. I personally would love to see Mortensen show his chops as a bad guy. Do you think he would make a good General Zod? And who would you like to see going head to head against Superman as Non? Terance Stamp is still great, just cast him again.
While they’re at, re-cast Margot Kidder for Lois Lane.
… and re-cast Ursa and Non from the original.
… and get Richard Donner to direct
… and John Williams to score
    … I don’t like change.

All this is false, should have used done a better misinformation campaign.

Viggo delivers excellent performances with more consistency than the US Postal Service delivers the mail and I’d love to see him as a villain. Still, I wish they’d use a bad guy from the comics that hasn’t been on film before, especially since Terence Stamp’s Zod remains so iconic. Since this is a reboot, I think it’d be easier to start fresh rather than having to replace so memorable a villain at the same time as establishing a new Superman.

I agree with everything you just said!!!

Stamp is too iconic, Viggo is great but I dont see him a good Zod, smallville proved that an actor taking over as Zod can prove disastrous! Although Smallville didnt even try to do the right thing with Zod. One of its many failiures!

And I too would rather see some villain from the comics that we havent seen yet, Darkseid, Doomsday, … possibly brainiac though ive never been a fan. Many other superman villains are too ridiculous however. Or at least the way theyve been portrayed in comics.

Would be a nice touch if Kents dog on the farm was called krypto though, but not a superdog.

Anyway, for me, if Zod were to work in a reboot, he would have to be different, menacing and a true general. Give him a helmet/mask and give him a Darth Vader style charisma and a true leader of an army that is a real threat to earth.

      Stamp, for Jor-el !!!

This is a load of bollocks. I can’t wait for another reboot…

Seriously, another Zod? Finally get an auteur to reboot but the bloke has the same rehash ideas that has been permeating throughout Hollywood.

I can’t wait for another reboot so we can get a new, New, NEW villain never before seen on screen.

I am so sick of Zod. Why can’t they do someone like Braniac?

Sick of Zod? Seriously? The man was featured in ONE movie almost 30 YEARS ago. Get a grip man.

Stamp was a great Zod, but Viggo would bring something different to the role. The biggest problem I see with bringing in Viggo is that I would immediately start rooting for Zod. I could just see Snyder having to reshoot the ending to have Zod win and start a spin-off franchise.

Oh, I know. I mean, Nolan already rehashed an iconic villain after only 20 years and that turned out so horri– oh, wait…

I’m not saying it can’t be done, just that it would be easier to start fresh with an unused villain. Superman’s Rogue’s Gallery has been the least-utilized in movies, so a reboot should supply ample opportunity to do so rather than go back to the original films. Superman Returns was self-consciously in the shadow of the Richard Donner movie(s), and I think that hurt it. For this movie to harken back to that era by adding Zod hurts it’s chances of success rather than helps, but I’m not saying the thing is doomed to failure.

Superman 2 is my favourite of all the Supes movies & as much as i’d like to see the phantom zone villains going toe-to-toe with Superman again,…i’d still prefer an unused nemesis like Doomsday or Brainiac.
Please,no origin story(it’s been done to death already)& no super sprog-that annoying kid from Superman Returns!!
