Vin Diesel and director Rob Cohen will return to the xXx franchise and shoot the third installment with 3D cameras.  Diesel and Cohen launched what was supposed to be a star vehicle franchise for the actor in 2002, but Diesel dropped out for the sequel and Cohen only served as executive producer  Deadline reports that Columbia Pictures is in talks with Paramount to take over the franchise, finance production and distribute the film in late 2011 or early 2012.  Here’s the “plot”:

Xander Cage (Diesel) is left for dead, but returns to execute a very difficult assignment that only he can pull off.

No word if that mission requires out-running an avalanche on a snowboard or awkwardly making out with Asia Argento.  The film will be set mostly in Europe and Samuel L. Jackson will return as Cage’s handler, Agent Augustus Gibbons.  Diesel plans to begin shooting on the new xXx after he wraps on Fast Five, the 5th installment in the Fast and Furious franchise.  Meanwhile, Cohen is shooting Coke’s first 3D commercial, which is great because what stopped me from buying Coca-Cola  was that their ads were only in 2D.

For those who need a brief refresher on the character, hit the jump.

Here’s how Wikipedia describes Mr. Xander Cage:

Cage, also known by his nickname “triple X”, is a thrill seeking American extreme sports enthusiast, stuntman and anti-establishment activist. Idolized in some sub-cultures, xXx is also hunted by the authorities and he is offered a deal to become a spy for the National Security Agency in exchange for leniency.

I would put in a plot synopsis for the first film, but after that description, I think we can both agree that “plot” is not what these movies are about.

Score. The first one rocked, its just a shame they had to tarnish the franchise with that pathetic excuse for a sequel. I love Ice Cube, but the movie stunk. Ice Cube deserves an action franchise of his own, not sloppy seconds. Speaking of which he needs to quit making those dumb family films.

Oh what a biz. VD passed on both these sequels when they offered him $20+M paydays back when. And now, here he is, back again. My question is: how much does he and Cohen get paid?

I'm optimistic about this. I hated that Vincent didn't come back for the sequel. State of the Union had an intriguing story idea, but was just terrible. Having this film shot with 3-D cameras will certainly be an advantage. Look forward to seeing a trailer for this and see in what direction they are going with this latest installment.
