Marvel Confirms Vin Diesel as Groot in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

     December 21, 2013

While rumored since filming began, Marvel has finally confirmed Vin Diesel will be voicing Groot in director James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy.  In addition, Diesel posted a picture of himself posing with the tree-like Groot, and James Gunn also offered his thoughts on Diesel being involved in the project.

“Yep it is completely official. AND he’s amazing. I never knew someone could say I AM GROOT so many different ways and with such feeling (and that sounds like I’m kidding but I’m not!)”

Hit the jump to check out the image along with Marvel’s press release.  The film stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Lee Pace, Karen Gillan, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, Michael Rooker, Djimon Hounsou, Peter Serafinowicz, and Benicio Del Toro.  Guardians of the Galaxy opens August 1, 2014.

Here’s what Gunn had to say about Diesel (via Twitter), followed by the image (via Facebook):

Vin Diesel is a super awesome dude. I can’t tell you how much I like this guy.
Here’s Marvel’s statement:

Vin Diesel is Groot! The star of the Fast and the Furious and Riddick franchises will lend his voice to Groot in Marvel’s live-action “Guardians of the Galaxy,” rounding out the team that includes Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Drax (Dave Bautista). Featured in four of the six movies in the fan-favorite “Fast & Furious” franchise, Diesel has helped the series gross over $2 billion at the box office; and will reprise his role in “Fast & Furious 7.” Diesel’s most recent film, “Riddick,” the third film in the franchise that has so far earned a cumulative $267.3 million across the globe, debuted this year at the top of the box office. In addition to lending his voice to several video games, Diesel’s received great acclaim for his voice work in the celebrated animated film “The Iron Giant,” directed by Brad Bird. In the far reaches of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, an unlikely cast of characters including Peter Quill, Gamora, Drax, Groot and Rocket Raccoon must join forces to defeat a cosmic force of epic proportions. Directed by James Gunn, the live-action “Guardians of the Galaxy” will take fans to new corners of the Marvel Universe when it hits theaters August 1, 2014, but in the meantime stay tuned to for the latest news as it breaks, including official casting, first looks and more!

    They actually look alike.

Must be crazy to be in Vin’s shoes right now…trying to do press shoots while still reeling from Pau Walker’s death…hope he’s ok :)

    • axalon

I wonder if people bring it up when they see him

  • Scurvy

I guess James Gunn never saw the video of Vin recording his lines for Iron Giant.

Great News! Vin for Groot, Paul for Ant-Man, now we need to get

    Chiwetel Ejiofor

    • Ruprect

Agreed. Been saying he should play BP for years now.

Guardians of the Galaxy is easily my most anticipated movie for next year. I love that entire cast. Chris Pratt is going to kill.

    • BrutalDEEJAY

Not most anticipated but yes it will be good. If F&F7 still makes it in 2013 then I say this will be the most anticipated film. Jason Statham, Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson & Michelle Rodriguez (Possibly Paul Walker. If he is in the movie I reckon it’d skyrocket in the BO).
I still reckon they should try and aim the release of F&F7 for the anniversary of his death.

Good to see them tie in with other marvel movied(thanos and avengers etc).still think xmen-DOFP will be my favourite superhero movie but even cap 2 is looking good!

I don’t really know anything about the characters but I’m always up for another Avengers-verse movie. Everything I’ve read does sound awesome and the cast is awesome, although I wish Jon Benjamin was Rocket. I’m mainly excited for it just to see how it does with audiences. I feel like if it’s a success then it opens the door for a lot of other lesser-known, quirky characters to get their own movies. Justice League Dark, Green Lantern Corps (I see a lot of similarities between Guardians and GL Corps),

      • Nerdgasm

People who say Jon Benjamin should have been Rocket are dumb. He has a very distinct voice. I don’t want rocket to sound like Archer as the dude can’t alter his voice. NOW if they have chosen to go Cockney with Rocket as he is in cartoons and comics then maybe Jon’s voice would be different but I want a take on the character that doesn’t make me go… Oh it’s Archer. Seriously you guys need to fuck off.

      • mike_thoms

Dumb, really? Couldn’t someone also say that Bradley Cooper’s Rocket Raccoon is just going to sound like Phil from Hangover? I think Jon Benjamin is talented enough to change his voice where necessary. His voice in the Diet Coke Zero ads is distinct from Archer, which is distinct from Bob’s Burgers which is distinct from Coach McGuirk. But I guess I’m just dumb like that. Jag.

  • paul walker

I’m still not buying him as groot. Stop trying to fool everyone n just admit he’s thanos

    • The Flobbit

      Back from the dead, friend?

    • Ben Wigler

The mouth area does even look like Thanos, doesn’t it? I wouldn’t doubt that it’s a real possibility that Thanos is masquerading as Groot.

    • Ridge

I think Diesel could be great as Thanos but in my opinion, Arnold Schwarzenegger should be Thanos, he really looks and talks like him, hope some day Marvel consider him for the role

  • The Flobbit

Well, I am Groot, I am GROOT, I…AM Groot!

  • Redjester

While I might not think much of his physical acting, anyone who’s seen the Iron Giant knows the man knows how to voice-act. Looking forward to this!

I just want to hear him ask it as a question repeatedly in many ways, throughout the film.
And then, to Declare It Victoriously in Battle, as Rocket Raccoon Flies off his shoulder, Machine Guns & Lasers pointed Every Which Direction.

Cuz its not like I’m excited for this Flick or anything already, knowing that’s bound to happen. :)

    What a crazy cast.
