Concept Art from VOLTRON Feature Pitch

by     Posted 3 years, 339 days ago

What’s this?  I thought the Voltron film had stalled indefinitely, content to settle for the animated Nicktoon series Voltron Force for the time being.  But Atlas Entertainment will not be satisfied.  The studio is reportedly putting together quite the pitch for a Voltron feature.  They’ve hired the screenwriting team of Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer, currently known as the writers of Sahara, perhaps soon known as the scribes behind Conan and Dr. Strange.

Part of that pitch includes some neat concept art, which you can check out after the jump.

For your reference, here’s a description of the first couple iterations of Voltron:

Lion Force Voltron
(Voltron of the Far Universe)

The first season… featured a team of five young pilots commanding five robot lions which could be combined to form Voltron. In this undefined future era, the Voltron Force was in charge of protecting the planet Arus (ruled by Princess Allura) from the evil King Zarkon (from planet Doom), his son Lotor, and the witch Haggar, who would create huge Robeasts to terrorize the people of Arus.

Vehicle Voltron
(Voltron of the Near Universe)

In this iteration of Voltron, the Galaxy Alliance’s home planets have become overcrowded, and a fleet of explorers has been sent to search for new planets to colonize. Along the way, they attract the attention of the evil Drule Empire, long engaged in an ongoing war against the Alliance, and the Drules proceed to interfere in the mission of the explorers and the colonists. Since the Voltron of Planet Arus was too far away to help the explorers, a totally new Voltron is constructed to battle the Drule threat. [Wikipedia]

And here’s the concept art courtesy of JoBlo.  To this writer, generally unfamiliar with the property, it doesn’t not look like Transformers.  If you consider yourself a Voltron fan, how do these images strike you?

The art looks cool, but lions look a little too complicated, like they did with transformers. All i know is why can’t anybody stick to the damn source material when it comes to big budget movies from established franchises. Why is Voltron in New York? I mean really! Stop ruining classic cartoons and video games please, stop changing everything about the story except for the title and the characters names/powers. I am looking at you Airbender, Prince of Persia, Mario Bros, Dragonball, Street Fighter etc.
Comic book canon is taken seriously when making a big budget(mostly, X-men Origins: Wolverine, just…wow…) why not with cartoons/anime and video games?

the problem I see is that they are one earth which never happened so the story if it involves earth will fail . voltronwas cool but not cause he defends earth it was cause he didnt

I think the major hurdle is the suspension of disbelief; I’d like to think I probably share the mindset of most people when I ask “what use is a giant mechanized lion over say… tanks, planes, etc?” What can it do, bound and pounce? Why not just have a giant robot that doesn’t need to seperate? I would really love to see a giant robot movie sometime soon (Robot Joxx doesn’t count), but I really don’t want it to be hokey or anything.

As for the “don’t ruin my cherished cartoons” crowd, well, you guys told me the 80s Transformer movie was a masterpiece… I kinda have to take your opinions with a heaping bowl of salt because of that.

The first one looked like a dark Iron Man only bigger and few changes to make it look like cat creatures.
The second nothing a lion at all. More of a street cat.
The third is kinda ok just waiting to be painted.

I’m excite to see this in my lifetime. :-)

I’m with romsy. That looks like Megatronimus Prime-not Voltron. They shouldn’t go that route with him. Fill in details, yes, but don’t make him look like the Transformers. Need a guide to go by: look at when the Japanese make feature films of their TV shows (Macross is a good example). They fill in all these fantastic details, but they keep the essence of the designs.

Basically: don’t f#@k up Voltron like you do everything else, Hollywood!

as a huuuuuge voltron fan, i kinda of like thier design, yes it looks like the Fallen a little from transformers but parts of it look really awesome. I LOVE the head. and i LOVE how the left arm lion is climbing Voltrons leg and the statue of liberty to dock with the shoulder.really awesome concept art.

Why can’t they be blocky like the original? Can’t they make a 3D version of the original, I mean really. No Overly-Sophisticated-Robots-In-Manhattan brawl movies, please

  • Luminousblane

what the?! the arm is attatching in that one pic, and the head’s already there! it’s feet and legs, then arms and body, THEN keith forms the head! it’s not that complicated!!!!
