The Playlist reports that writer-director Jonathan Levine (The Wackness, All the Boys Love Mandy Lane) will adapt the upcoming romantic zombie comedy novel (or “rom-zom-com” as coined by the tagline for Shaun of the Dead), Warm Bodies. Author Isaac Marion based the novel off his own short story, I am a Zombie Filled with Love, which you can read online here. The short story is told from the perspective a zombie through diary entries (That brings me back; I remember the first Resident Evil game’s had a diary where a researcher chronicled his own zombification, ending with the entry, “Itchy. Tasty.”). According to Playlist, the book is “fantastic and that it’s a darkly comic, existential zombie romance set at the end of the world,” which matches up with the tone of the short story.
Levine recently replaced Nicole Holofcener as the director of the upcoming dramedy I’m with Cancer starring Seth Rogen and James McAvoy. Filming is scheduled to begin next month, but Levine plans to have the script for Warm Bodies finished before he starts shooting on Cancer.
