In the initial report, Wayne Kramer (The Cooler) was tagged to direct Sylvester Stallone in the action thriller Headshot.  However creative differences led Kramer away from the project last week.  Stallone quickly found a replacement -- he has revealed to AICN that Walter Hill will command the director's chair:

"It's official. We've got Walter Hill on board so would love for you to let the world know.  We've been on the same track since The Driver, then 48 Hrs didn't happen so here we are almost 35 years later, I'm finally driving with Walter Hill."

The Headshot script by Alessandro Camon (The Messenger) sees Stallone as a New Orleans hitman who teams with a young NYPD detective: "The unlikely duo, brought together by two vicious murders, take on all who stand in their way, and are willing to sacrifice everything to exact revenge.”  More after the jump:

The Driver and 48 Hrs are two films from Hill's filmography that apparently star Stallone in some alternate universe.  (Supposedly, this version may even have featured a Stallone pairing with Richard Pryor or Denzel Washington.  Where's a wormhole when you need one?)  Discounting 48 Hrs., you may know Hill best as the director of The Warriors.  If I'm honest, I am most familiar with his work on Brewster's Millions, a movie I've seen a thousand times thanks to endless reruns on cable.  Slice it any way you want -- Hill is an exciting name to team with Stallone.

Filming for Headshot is scheduled to begin next month in Louisiana and New York.  (Just throwing this out there: I'd love to see Denzel Washington as the "young NYPD detective" to fulfill destiny.)  After that, Stallone will get to work on a sequel to The Expendables, which he may or may not direct in time for its August 17, 2012 release.
