Timur Bekmambetov Talks WANTED 2; Will Continue the Story of James McAvoy’s Character but with a “Great Twist”

     June 18, 2012

For anyone who was clamoring for Wanted 2, it’s been a disappointing past four years.  After listening to Mark Millar talk out of his ass about how far the sequel is coming along, Angelina Jolie dropped out, but then there was a glimmer of progress when original writers Derek Haas and Michael Brandt signed on last fall.  Since then, word has been quiet, but director Timur Bekmambetov provided an update on the project this past weekend at the press junket for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

Hit the jump for more.

Speaking to The Playlist, Bekmambetov said that they had been stuck on how to proceed on a sequel where most of the cast had died in the first movie and the characters took their orders from a quilt.  But now it looks like they’ve cracked the story:

“An unbelievable thing happened three weeks ago,” Bekmambetov said. “Because we stopped, we didn’t know what to do for three or four years. Three weeks ago I came up with a great idea and I pitched this idea and everybody fell in love with it. And now I think we’re on track. Right now the writer is working on the script, and it will be shocking.”

Bekmambetov wouldn’t go into details regarding this “great idea” that “everybody fell in love with”, but he said it would continue the story of James McAvoy‘s character, Wesley Gibson.  “Other people are dead, you know, we can’t bring them back,” said Bekmambetov.  “The story is the same character, same mythology, but it’s got a great twist.”  I’m not sure what the twist is, but I hope it will involve the old “Explosive Rodent” gambit.

Is Katherine Heigl still stepping in for Angelina Jolie?

Hopefully they can get Jolie back on-board. I don’t see her slate as being very full at the moment and she was pretty awesome in the role.

      “pretty awesome” and pretty dead.

I thought the first movie was terrible, and I have no idea how they blackmailed Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman into that mess.

The comic was actually one of the few Mark Millar books that I enjoyed, but the movie didn’t bear any resemblance to the source material. So weird, especially considering superheroes are all the craze now.

I really hope this and Kick Ass 2 get shelved. I can’t even fathom two more unnecessary sequels than these.

disagree with you on Kick Ass, thought that was pretty great. I’m with you on Wanted though, terribly lame movie.

I agree Anthem. The first Wanted was a throw away movie at best. McAvoy has gone on to better projects i.e. X-Men First Class and the follow-up. But I disagree on Kick-Ass, seeing what they did with the second series of the comic was pretty awesome, and if done well (and thats a big “if”) could be pretty sick.

      completely agree!

and the exploding rats was truly lame…..you’re gonna tell me they rigged all of those rats with explosives one by one to achieve the end result betting on the rats?

i can get behind the outrageous plot development here and there but that was just stoooooopid!

Super Meh. this Wanted is unwanted for me.

Angelina Jolie ? is she an actress for real ? All what she does is to showcase her body and her botoxed lips.

  • Cordell

I live to see Angelina’s hot bod, maybe they can have Megan Fox play a character similar to Angelina….mmmmmm

  • Daath

there is something wrong in that arm

They ARE on crack. Wanted was a great flick. Nearly but not quite AA though because the plot was a little bit ridiculous, with the silliest bit being the Loom Of Fate. What next for the sequel? The Sewing Machine of Suggestibility?
