I thought I could rest easy knowing an unncessary sequel to 2008′s Wanted was pretty much dead. Turns out I’m in for some sleepless nights. The Wrap has confirmed a tweet from screenwriter Derek Haas than he and his writing partner Michael Brandt will return to pen the script for Wanted 2. Wanted co-writer Chris Morgan (Fast Five) wasn’t mentioned so presumably he’s currently out on this one although it’s possible he could be brought in down the road. Additionally, it’s unknown whether Timur Bekmambetov will return to direct.
The new movie is “going to take off after the events of what just happened,” says Haas. “Pick up Wesley a few years later and go back in for another round.” Putting aside the fact that taking off after the events of what just happened is the standard definition of a sequel, it’s noteworthy that Haas says they intend to bring back Wesley (James McAvoy) but makes no mention of Fox (Angelina Jolie). You may recall that getting Jolie back was a major sticking point in getting the sequel off the ground but she dropped out to do Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity (which she also dropped out of). No word if they plan to recast the role or simply bring in a new love-interest. My guess would be the latter since it’s a difficult plot move to bring back the character in the first place.

Aaargh! I was so sorry for Morgan Freeman when I forced myself to watch Wanted. As dumb as Salt. Of course it is, when you know that Angelina ballerina plays only in dumb movies.

I guess in the past year, McAvoy has become a more bankable name in Hollywood so getting back Angelina isn’t as much of a priority now. Throw in another well recognisable actor and the star power is on par with the first Wanted. I’m guessing this is what the studios mindset is?
That’s what I’m thinking too, dean. (Won’t miss her at all though.) Would hate to see it made without Bekmambetov though–McAvoy’s obligated for two more…
Jolie kinda sucks usually anyway. Her character died, not that it would stop Hollywood. Let her go peacefully.
When i first watched Wanted i thought it was gonna be a crappy-average action movie, i was really surprised at how good it was. A damn good action movie. I don’t know about a sequel though, because they killed Jolie. I guess they could get another hot woman though haha……
damn those hollywood people who want to make movies that the public would pay to see…how dare they try to make money. isn’t the movie business only about making art-house philosophically sophisticated movies???? o matt it’s really hard for you to exist in such a greedy world huh, can’t even rest easy on things that don’t even involved you. hard life yo. somewhere someone made a bad movie and you lose sleep over it, please let the responsibility of the movie world rest on your shoulders.
Surprised at how good it was? When I finally watched on a flight a couple weeks ago I wasn’t expecting anything really good (more mindless entertainment), but I was surprised at how truly awful it was. Dumb and often times annoying. I think it actually made my flight seem longer.
They are easy to please…that’s for what we still see more and more dumb movies released.
