The Planet of the Apes franchise is one of the best film franchises of all-time, and it’s most recent installment, 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of Apes, was a moving, thoughtful, and intense look at the spark that sets humanity and apes on the road to war. We’ll finally get to see that war in next summer’s War for the Planet of the Apes. The film will debut its first footage this weekend to fans at New York Comic-Con, but in the meantime, 20th Century Fox has released a brief teaser that’s a digital billboard in Times Square.

In this teaser, we have Caesar (Andy Serkis) saying his farewell to Malcolm (Jason Clarke) at the end of Dawn, although it’s been slightly re-arranged. In the movie, Caesar says, “War has... already begun. Ape started war. And human... Human will not forgive. You must go... before fighting begins. I am sorry... my friend.” In this teaser, Caesar says, “You must go... before fighting begins. I am sorry. War has begun.”

In War, Caesar and his apes come into deadly conflict with a ruthless figure known as the Colonel (Woody Harrelson), and after Caesar’s forces suffer massive losses, his inner darkness begins to take hold and push him to avenge his kind. I wouldn’t be surprised if Caesar dies in this movie, and it completes his part of the Apes story, but also lays the groundwork for a new leading figure (assuming Fox wants to keep cranking out these wonderful movies).

Check out the teaser below. War for the Planet of the Apes opens July 14, 2017, and also stars Steve Zahn, Judy Greer, Karin Konoval, Amiah Miller, and Terry Notary.

Here’s the official synopsis for War for the Planet of the Apes:

In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel.  After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind.  As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.
