Collider reader John has sent us some photos from the set of Steven Spielberg's upcoming film War Horse. For those who aren't familiar with the project, it's about a horse named Joey who is sold to the army during World War I and who longs to return home to Albert, the farmer's son he left behind. The film stars Jeremy Irvine, Peter Mullan (Boy A), Emily Watson (Synecdoche, New York), David Thewlis (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban), Stephen Graham (Public Enemies), Benedict Cumberbatch (The Whistleblower), and Tom Hiddleston (Thor).

John tells us that these photos were taken a few weeks ago in the village of Meavy, England. We can't confirm that, but we have no reason to believe why that wouldn't be true. These photos are definitely from the set of the film or that is an excellent Steven Spielberg impersonator taking part in an elaborate ruse. Hit the jump to check out the images. War Horse is slated to open on August 10, 2011.

Here’s the literary synopsis via Amazon:

With his officer, he charges toward the enemy, witnessing the horror of the battles in France. But even in the desolation of the trenches, Joey’s courage touches the soldiers around him and he is able to find warmth and hope. But his heart aches for Albert, the farmer’s son he left behind. Will he ever see his true master again?
