After years and years of development, production is finally getting underway in Vancouver on the feature film adaptation Warcraft, based on the incredibly popular video game.  Sam Raimi was initially onboard to take the helm a few years ago, but he subsequently stepped down.  Now, with Moon and Source Code director Duncan Jones onboard, filming is beginning on what is poised to be a very long shoot.  The impressive cast is led by Ben Foster, Paula Patton, Travis Fimmel, Toby Kebbell, Rob Kazinsky, and Dominic Cooper, and while we know very little about the story of the pic, Cooper recently teased some of the themes that Warcraft will be dealing with while also possibly revealing that he plays a human in the pic.  Hit the jump to read on.

Speaking with Crave Online, Cooper seemed to confirm that he will be playing a human in the fantasy film and talked a bit about how Warcraft draws parallels to today’s world:

“There’s a very human story at the heart of it because there’s a few of us that are humans in it that are up against tribes and problematic issues that exist in the world that we exist in. It’s happening all over the world at the moment and you see it happening all over. People have savaged their own lands and their own environment and they’re having to find a new environment in which to move into through the hostility of others. If there’s something as poignant as that that we can relate to and that we see unfolding in everyday life, then it will make it a worthwhile story.”

Cooper would seem to be hinting at the war between humans and orcs from the original real-time strategy games, which is what we heard about the film a few months ago from special effects supervisor Bill Westenhofer.  While we may have to wait a while for more information on the film, it sure is shaping up to be pretty interesting.  Can Duncan Jones finally pull off the first good video game adaptation?  We’ll find out when Warcraft opens March 11, 2016.
