Warner Bros. is looking to get into the Viking business, as the studio has just acquired a pitch for an epic Viking tale with True Blood star Alexander Skarsgard attached to star and produce. The film marks Skarsgard’s first effort as a producer, and Showblitz reports that the story centers on two Viking warrior brothers who are banished to North America and set out on a journey to return to Sweden. Playwright Chris Boal is writing the script, and the project (which has a working title of The Vanguard) is being eyed as an epic in the vein of Gladiator and Braveheart. Hit the jump for more.Mel Gibson was previously trying to get a Viking epic off the ground with Leonardo DiCaprio and screenwriter William Monahan before DiCaprio wisely jumped ship following Gibson being outed as a crazyperson. Skarsgard himself is a native Swede, and his Viking flashbacks on True Blood are always a highlight of the show. He’s a fine actor and this project seems a perfect fit.The actor has starring roles in the upcoming Straw Dogs remake and Peter Berg’s big-budget Battleship movie, which opens May 18th, 2012. He can currently be seen on the fourth season of HBO’s monster hit series (wordplay!) True Blood.
