When Guillermo del Toro announced he would follow up Pacific Rim by making a gothic horror story, I was ecstatic.  While I love his big budget Hollywood movies, I also love his smaller films, where he can explore interesting characters against the backdrop of something unusual. In this year’s Crimson Peak, produced by Legendary and Universal and starring Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston and Charlie Hunnam, del Toro uses his unique sensibilities to tell a gothic romance that features odd characters, ghosts, and a house that I’d never want to live in.

As most of you know, del Toro co-wrote the film with Matthew Robbins, and the synopsis reads as follows: “In the aftermath of a family tragedy, an aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes and remembers.”

While at Comic-Con over the weekend, I got a few minutes to interview del Toro and used the time to play “Save or Kill.” If you haven’t seen it yet, the game reveals which franchises, characters or bands someone would choose when pitted against another of equal value. Han Solo or Indiana Jones – if you were told you could only save one and the other would be erased from existence forever, who would you pick?
