I like Gremlins, but I love Gremlins 2: The New Batch. Director Joe Dante has admitted he wasn’t much interested in a sequel to the Christmas horror classic until he was told he could do pretty much whatever he wanted with the follow-up, and boy did he take full advantage of that carte blanche. While Gremlins is an Amblin-infused family story of sorts, Gremlins 2 is a satirical rebuke of corporate culture and a zany creature feature all rolled into one, and it’s absolutely delightful. Don’t get me wrong, this is a weird movie, but it is unabashedly, gloriously weird in the very best way imaginable, and the most recent episode of the Comedy Central sketch series Key and Peele attempted to tap into just how something so crazy ever came to fruition in the first place.

In the sketch below, the impeccably talented Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key imagine what the brainstorming session that came up with the plot and characters of Gremlins 2 was like, and it’s unsurprisingly very, very funny. I wouldn't dare spoil any of the fun here, but suffice it to say the comedy duo found a fantastic angle with which to tackle the origin of this wonderfully madcap movie while simultaneously ridiculing and hailing the film as a miracle of the Hollywood studio system. And for what it’s worth (as seen in the tweet below the video), Dante himself approves of this version of the Gremlins 2 origin story.

Watch the sketch in the video below. The fifth and final season of Key and Peele is currently airing on Comedy Central and will wrap up with the series finale next month. Gremlins 2, meanwhile, is available to purchase online and at your local retailers, and if you don’t already own it what is wrong with you?
