Hit the jump for casting news regarding Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje in The Thing prequel, Octavia Spencer in The Help, and Grant Bowler in The Killer Elite and City of Gardens.
Shock reports that Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, best known for his role as “Mr. Eko” in Lost, has been cast in the role of “Derek” in Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.’s prequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 sci-fi horror The Thing. The Thing also stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World), Eric Christian Olson (Community), and Joel Edgerton (The Square). Akinnuoye-Agbaje was most recently seen in last year’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.
Moving on, Octavia Spencer (Rob Zombie’s Halloween II) has joined the cast of Tate Taylor’s adaptation of The Help. Based on the novel by Kathryn Stockett, the film is set in Jackson, Mississippi in the early 1960s and per ComingSoon “explores how the unspoken code of behavior governing Southern households is shattered when an aspiring writer (Emma Stone) interviews a maid (Viola Davis), who speaks candidly about her experiences. The interview sets off shock waves that reverberate across the entire community.” The film also stars Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Lowell.
Finally, True Blood star Grant Bowler has landed roles in two upcoming films. Reuters reports that Bowler will co-star alongside Jason Statham, Clive Owen, and Robert De Niro in The Killer Elite. The film is about “the real-life efforts of a private British vigilante group to eliminate a band of contract killers. Bowler will play Capt. James Cregg, an SAS officer and war hero who is one of the targets. It is shooting in Australia.” Sound like a pretty sweet film.
The other flick, City of Gardens is slightly heavier fare. Gardens “centers on a young California surfer in 1980 who is framed and thrown in a jail for political prisoners before escaping. Bowler will play a schizophrenic named Jesus Christ who is stuck in solitary confinement. I will write letters demanding that Alan from The Hangover has a crossover with Grant’s character from this film and they make a movie called The Adventures of Fat and Schizo Jesus.
