The weekend box office numbers are in, and families couldn’t stay away from The Angry Birds Movie. According to THR, the movie pulled in $39 million on its opening weekend to land the number one spot at the box office. “Worldwide, Angry Birds (which features the voices of Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride and Maya Rudolph) earned an estimated $94 million this weekend, bringing its total to $150 million.”
In the U.S., the movie beat out expectations to take the top spot from Captain America: Civil War, which earned $33.1 million in its third weekend to bring its domestic total to $347.4m and its worldwide total to $1 billion. It currently sits as the 19th highest grossing film of all time.
The other new releases this weekend didn’t fare as well as Angry Birds. Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising only took in an estimated $21.8 million, which was a 56% drop from the opening of the first film in 2014, which pulled in $49 million on its opening weekend. Tracking for the sequel was in the low $30 million range.
The Nice Guys also opened soft. The Shane Black comedy noir landed at the #4 spot with an estimated $11.3 million from 2,865 theaters.
