Super Bowl weekend is usually more about the trailers than the films themselves, and the year of our lord 2019 is definitive proof as to why. Glass will end the frame on top, with M. Night Shyamalan's wonky twist-filled thriller taking home another $9.5 million, bringing its domestic total to $88 million on a $20 million budget. But Sony's Miss Bala, the weekend's sole newcomer, landed with a thud in third, debuting to $6.7 million, adding little to what THR is reporting to be the slowest Super Bowl weekend at the box office in almost 20 years.

Occasionally, a movie will randomly pop during Super Bowl Weekend. In 2008, the Miley Cyrus concert film Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds opened to $31 million, while films like Dear John ($30.4 million) and Taken ($24.7 million) found footing in the dead zone. (The last movie to top $20 million during Super Bowl weekend was Warm Bodies in 2013.) But Miss Bala couldn't find an audience or any critical support; the film's opening numbers put it below The Upside, which nabbed $8.8 million in its fourth weekend.

Superhero holdovers Aquaman and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse rounded out the top 5 with $4.8 million and $4.4 million, respectively. Both films have broke a few records as of late, with the billion+ Aquaman becoming the highest-grossing DC Comics film of all time while Spider-Verse crossed the $170 million mark domestically, the best showing for an animated film for Sony.

Meanwhile, Peter Jackson's WWI documentary They Shall Not Grow Old expanded into 735 theaters, taking in $2.4 million. Our own Dave Trumbore called the film "technologically impressive, historically important, and equal parts inspiring and damning when it comes to the human condition."
