The weekend box office numbers are in, and Don’t Breathe has easily held on to the top spot for the second weekend in a row. According to Variety, the film is likely to pull in $15 million over the weekend, which will bring its total to $51 million. The question now becomes how much further can Don’t Breathe go in the weeks ahead? It’s possible that people might show up to Sully because it’s a new Clint Eastwood film starring Tom Hanks, but they might just as likely say, “Don’t I already know this story?” In which case, Don’t Breathe could reign again next weekend. However, I don’t see how it topples Blair Witch on the weekend of the 16th since anticipation for that film is high.

Don’t Breathe wasn’t the only success story of the weekend. Suicide Squad is likely to pull in $13 million over the four-day holiday, which will push its domestic total past $300 million. That makes it the eighth film this year to cross the $300 million mark, and the second to do so from Warner Bros. (the other being Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice).

STX Entertainment also has a reason to celebrate as their R-rated comedy Bad Moms pulled in $5 million this weekend, which pushes it past the $100 million mark. That’s an incredibly good return for a movie that only cost $20 million to make.

But when it came to the newcomers at the box office, there was less reason to cheer. The $20 million drama The Light Between Oceans is headed for only $6 million this weekend.  That makes it the highest performer among the newcomers, but still below studio expectations.

Then again, The Light Between Oceans is a smashing success at the box office compared to the flop that was Morgan. Granted, the movie only cost $6 million to make, but Fox expected it to gross $5-6 million on its opening weekend. Instead, it’s expected to only make $2.3 million over the four-day weekend from 2,020 theaters. That’s an abysmal per-screen average.

Finally, The Weinstein Company expanded Hands of Stone from 800 theaters to 2,000 theaters, but it didn’t help the boxing drama at all. The movie is only expected to gross $1.6 million over the Labor Day weekend.
