Weekly TV Guide: ‘American Horror Story: Hotel’ Finale, ‘Billions’ and ‘Colony’ Premiere

The Collider Weekly TV Guide is a rundown of notable episodes, premieres, returns, finales, and opportunities to catch up on great shows (or cast an eye to the occasional train wreck). Check out our picks for the week beginning with Monday, January 11th:

Monday, 1/11

Superstore, “Shoplifter” (NBC, 8 p.m.) – The latest episode of NBC’s amiable workplace comedy sees Amy’s (America Ferrera) daughter coming to the store when she’s without childcare, and is promptly put under the care of Ben Feldman’s squirrely Jonah. Elsewhere, a bit of a feud breaks out between Mateo (Nico Santos) and Nichole Bloom’s Cheyenne over, of all things, a couch.

Tuesday, 1/12

Shadowhunters Series Premiere, “The Mortal Cup” (ABC Family, 9 p.m.) – A TV adaptation of Cassandra Clare’s beloved The Mortal Instruments series, this middling fantasy-drama follows Clary Fray (Katherine McNamara), an 18-year-old who unexpectedly finds out that she belongs to a genetic line of angel-human hybrids.

Wednesday, 1/13

Second Chance Series Premiere, “A Suitable Donor” (Fox, 9 p.m.) – In this latest, marginally enjoyable take on the Frankenstein story, Robert Kazinsky stars as Ray Pritchard, a disgraced former police officer who is given a, ahem, Second Chance at life with the help of an eccentric billionaire (Adhir Kalyan) and his bioengineering sister (Dilshad Vadsaria).

American Horror Story: Hotel Season Finale, “Be Our Guest” (FX, 10 p.m.) – The Cortez is now under the rule of Iris and Liz (Kathy Bates and Denis O’Hare), and things will never be the same in the last episode of Ryan Murphy’s latest AHS variation. Meanwhile, John and Alex (Wes Bentley and Chloë Sevigny) are startled by how hard it is to get back into the swing of things outside of the hotel.

Younger Season 2 Premiere, “Tattoo You/The Mao Function” (TVLand, 10 p.m.) – In the Season 2 premiere, Caitlin (Tessa Albertson) returns to school and Kelsey (Hilary Duff) is wooed by a new publisher, while Liza (Sutton Foster) and Josh (Nico Tortorella) take time to work on their relationship.

Colony Series Premiere, “Pilot” (USA, 10 p.m.) – The latest sci-fi series from Carlton Cuse focuses on a Los Angeles family living under extraterrestrial occupation, with the father (Lost’s Josh Holloway) attempting a dangerous rescue and his wife (The Walking Dead’s Sarah Wayne Callies) tries to come to the aid of a close relative in need of help.

Idiotsitter Series Premiere, “Pilot” (Comedy Central, 10 p.m.) – There’s plenty of promise to this latest Comedy Central series, which follows Billie (Charlotte Newhouse), a recent Harvard grad, who accidentally finds herself in the position of looking after Gene, a young, unhinged rich woman under house arrest, played by the brilliant Jillian Bell.

Sunday, 1/17

Angie Tribeca Series Premiere, “Pilot” (TBS, 9 p.m.) – TBS is offering a pretty unique experience for TV audiences with their latest series, a Los Angeles-set cop procedure spoof which stars Rashida Jones as the titular detective. They will be allowing viewers the chance to binge the show, which is produced by Steve and Nancy Carell, on the night of its premiere, offering a 25-hour marathon for audiences. The first episode finds Angie dealing with a new partner and a blackmailing plot against the mayor.

Billions Series Premiere, “Pilot” (Showtime, 10 p.m.) – Insider trading is only the tip of the iceberg in this financial drama-thriller, which pits an ambitious, smart U.S. attorney, played by the great Paul Giamatti, against a brilliant, pompous hedge-fund manager with billions in the bank, played by Homeland’s Damian Lewis. If nothing else, the show gives us a chance to watch these two fantastic actors play off one another for extended periods of time.
