Wentworth Miller’s Leonard Snart was easily one of the best parts of Legends of Tomorrow. He pitched his performance between genuine and a Batman villain. It was a little campy but also a little honest, and it made him a standout in a show that had become increasingly tedious.

Unfortunately, he will no longer be flying through time with the waveriding crew. Per Deadline, on last night’s episode of LoT, “the Time Council revealed to Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) that they have been controlling the Legends actions through a device called the Oculus, aiding Vandal Savage’s rise to power. To defeat Vandal, the team tries to destroy the Oculus but there is a fail safe that must be manually held in place, and it is Snart who sacrifices himself and is killed in the explosion.”

But that’s not the end of Miller or his involvement in the other Greg Berlanti shows—The Flash, Arrow, and/or Supergirl. When they signed him to the show, they knew he wouldn’t be a regular to the end of the series. Instead, they signed him to a unique contract where his duties are spread out over other Warner Bros. TV shows, namely Flash and Legends. Cryptically, Berlanti says that Miller, who is busy shooting the Prison Break limited series, “won’t be part of the team of Legends on board of The Waverider next year, he will have a very active role on the show.”

The time-traveling nature of the show makes it so that he can be dead and still alive, and it will be interesting to see what kind of narrative gymnastics they attempt to pull off so they can keep him around. As for Legends of Tomorrow, it will be casting two new series regulars for Season 2, a male and a female cast member. “Every year for this show people should expect a new adventure,” said Berlanti, dropping a few hints about Season 2. “There will be new teammates, a new big bad. Mixing and matching things is part of the fun of the show.”
