One of the pleasant surprises of 2014 was Taika Waititi’s vampire mockumentary, What We Do in the Shadows. The comedy followed four vampires—Viago (Waititi), Vladislav (Jemaine Clement), Deacon (Jonathan Brugh), and Petyr (Ben Fransham)—who share a flat in modern-day Wellington, New Zealand. It was a quirky, funny little comedy that found a cult following and helped Waititi land the director’s chair on Thor: Ragnarok.

According to Radio New Zealand News, New Zealand On Air (NZOA) has picked up a six-episode spin-off of What We Do in the Shadows entitled Paranormal Event Response Unit, which was conceived by Clement and Waititi. The show will features “police officers Karen and Mike, who ‘keep us safe from supernatural phenomena in their own police reality series’, NZOA said.”

Presumably, these police officers will run into the vampires or possibly the werewolves featured in What We Do in the Shadows at some point during the six-episode run. It will be interesting to see if Paranormal has the same kind of comedy as What We Do, or if it will even be a mockumentary-style format.

For his part, here's what Waititi tweeted about the series:

It’s worth noting that Paranormal Event Response Unit doesn’t preclude the possibility of a What We Do in the Shadows sequel. As we reported this past January, Clement said they’re “trying to write a werewolves spin-off” that would be entitled We’re Wolves. The movie would focus on the werewolf Anton, played by Rhys Darby.

What do you think about a What We Do in the Shadows spin-off? Do you think that’s the right story to tell with these characters? Sound off in the comment section.
