Whitney Houston in Talks to Join Mike Epps and Jordin Sparks in Sony’s SPARKLE Remake

     September 12, 2011

With Warner Bros.’ musical remake A Star Is Born getting pushed back indefinitely due to Beyoncé’s pregnancy, Sony Pictures is jumping all over the chance to put out its own music-centric redo. Variety reports that Whitney Houston is in talks to join both Mike Epps (The Hangover) and American Idol-winner Jordin Sparks in the studio’s remake of the 1976 music drama Sparkle. Salim Akil (Jumping the Broom) will direct the pic from a screenplay by his wife, Mara Brock Akil (writer/producer for ABC’s Cougar Town).

For those unfamiliar with the original, it was co-written by Joel Schumacher and followed the rise of an all-sister trio whose success wreaks havoc on their personal lives in the late 1950s. Per the report, Akil’s remake will be set during Motown’s rise in 1968 Detroit and will focus on the youngest of three sisters, a musically gifted youngster named Sparkle (Sparks) whose rise to fame is spattered with familial troubles. There is no word on which roles Epps and potentially Houston will be taking on but, with production on the remake set to begin next month, my guess is that more details will be available shortly.

After The Bodyguard (1992) was released, I thought that she had an illustrious movie career ahead of her but it doesn’t seem like she ever lived up to her promise sadly due to focusing more on his music career and her personal problems. She only did Waiting to Exhale (1995) and The Preacher’s Wife (1996).
I hope that she returns to movies. She is an underrated actress and should have joined the A-list years ago. So, I hope that after she makes a complete recovery soon, she does more mainstream movies, tries to reach her full potential as an actress and tries to win an Oscar.

It would be nice to see Houston give a strong performance if she lands a role in Sparkle, I am not sure what role Epps would play in Sparkle but he can be a comic spark plug for a movie like this.

Another remake. SIGH. I’ve seen the original, it was an okay movie and i’m not knocking Jordan Sparks but when I compare her to the original Sparkle, Irene Cara, it’s just not the same

Whitney Houston (singer) in a movie called ‘Sparkle’…
Mariah Carey (singer) in a movie called ‘Glitter’…

Don’t singers know that participating in a movie with any kind of adjective for ‘shiny’ as its title is fatal to their career?

What’s next, Beyonce in a movie called ‘Shimmer’?

I hope this movie does alright. Whitney Houston, despite her rather public fall-from-grace, is still a STAR in the biggest sense of the word, and I bet she has enough of a [weathered and weary] fanbase to make this movie profitable. I don’t think I’m alone when I say that I’d love to see one of the great Divas have a bit of a comeback.

They’re also doing a sequel to “Waiting to Exhale”, so it seems evident that Whitney is trying to get herself back into films.
