Warner Bros. Acquires Doc Holliday-Wyatt Earp Western WILD GUNS

     April 4, 2011

Warner Bros. has picked up T.S. Nowlin’s western spec script Wild GunsHeat Vision reports that the script has “shades of Tombstone and Sherlock Holmes” and centers on legendary gunslingers Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday.  The duo teams up after the Civil War to rescue the daughter of Sitting Bull from a powerful Shaman.  I suppose an alternate title could have been American History, I Hate You.  I don’t think a Western needs to be 100% historically accurate, but I was unaware that there was a Shaman problem in the old West.  I was also unaware that Sitting Bull, whose claim to fame is resisting the American government, needed the help of two American gunslingers.

Hit the jump for more details on the project as well as other Earp movies in the works.

Warner Bros. exec Matt Cherniss will oversee the project for the studio while Hollywood Gang’s John Ridley will be involved in a producing capacity.  Nowlin recently sold his spec script about Christopher Columbus to billionaire Richard Branson with McG attached to direct.  Heat Vision reports that Nowlin also has a Marco Polo project set up at Endgame.

Wild Guns is the latest Wyatt Earp project to head into development.  Last month, Val Kilmer signed on to star in the indie The First Ride of Wyatt Earp while last summer Sam Raimi was attached to direct the futuristic western Earp: Saints for Sinners.  While I’m happy about Hollywood’s willingness to make more westerns, it currently sounds like Wild Guns is a poor man’s Shanghai Noon.

Sitting Bull needs help against a shaman? How about a little research folks? Sitting Bull WAS a shaman! He was never a chief, he was a medicine man of the Hunkpapa Soiux. Oh well, America has never been big for real history.

Matt, your cynical reporting is one of the major reasons that this is the primary movie blog I read. When I see the headlines for some of these projects, I immediately sigh. But as soon as I read the articles I laugh that someone shows a similar viewpoint. Keep it up.
