WILD Trailer: Reese Witherspoon Sets out on a Solitary Hike

     July 10, 2014

Fox Searchlight has released the first trailer for WildDallas Buyers Club director Jean-Marc Vallée’s adaptation of Cheryl Strayed’s memoir.  Reese Witherspoon takes on the role of Strayed in the pic, as she decides to hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Coast Trail alone after the dissolution of her marriage and death of her mother.  There’s plenty more on display here than scrapbook moments from Strayed’s journey of self-discovery, as the trailer cuts between the challenges she faces on her hike and pivotal decisions she made in the past.  One imagines the feature film will follow a similar style, paralleling her trials and tribulations during both her metaphorical journey and her literal one. However Vallée handles the film’s framework, the inspiring story is almost certain to spark some awards talk.

Here’s the official synopsis for Wild:

With the dissolution of her marriage and the death of her mother, Cheryl Strayed (Reese Witherspoon) has lost all hope.  After years of reckless, destructive behavior, she makes a rash decision.  With absolutely no experience, driven only by sheer determination, Cheryl hikes more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, alone.  WILD powerfully captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddens, strengthens, and ultimately heals her.

Oh God! Looks like a parody of Oscar bait. Someone needs to save us from Witherspoon’s “acting”!

    • The Player

Agree. This seems like Eat, Pray, Love 2: Balenciaga!

Is this that Sean Penn movie where she dies eating poison berries by mistake and Vince Vaughn has a small role as a ranch hand?

    Aggg. Horrible decision casting Witherspoon.
She’s trying really hard to get nominated.

  • Jamie Teller

    Wow, this looks like tripe.

  • Tyler

So basically it’s a female version of Into the Wild?

    • Elisa

This isn’t just like Into the Wild. Strayed is smart enough NOT to die in the wilderness.

  • Bo

Jeez, I hope things worked out for this poor, suffering woman who had to walk/hike a thousand miles to think things through.

  • Jamesy

Physically, Renee Zellweger would have been a better fit. In terms of acting ability, Jessica Chastain would have killed this.

  • MJ

Look at the photos — does anyone really believe she could hike 1000 miles with that huge backpack? I’ve done a lot of hiking, and this looks dubious at best to me.

    • Elisa

      Read the book? It happened.

      • MJ

That’s not my point. I’m sure “the real lady” was stronger and able to pack more efficiently than this silly unrealistic photo of “Legally Blond with a Gigantic Backpack.” LOL

  • J.Goines

surprised Leo didn’t throw on a wig for this in an effort to finally get that Oscar

  • Joe

Why is everyone hating on Reese? The real life character that she plays in this movie is not supposed to portray someone of possible sheer strength or physical ability. She’s supposed to portray someone of complete vulnerability and physical inability, just like Cheryl Strayed, someone who has never hiked before, especially 1000 miles. It’s amazing that everyone on this comment page have absolutely no fucking clue to how “maybe” casting takes on different factors other than what movies they made in the past. All of you fucking morons on this comment page I’m sure make regular comments on films, but in truth have no film intelligence or even the smarts to really understand anything : )

    • Bloost

Because she’s too old for the role and isn’t a good actress at all.

  • Elisa

Wow, a lot of misogynistic bullshit comments on here from people who never read the book or know what this is even about.

And no: This isn’t just like Into the Wild. Strayed is smart enough NOT to die in the wilderness.

I’m sorry but it looked good.
