Will Legendary Pictures Let GODZILLA Go Stomping Through Cities Again?

The towering star of countless Toho films and one Blue Oyster Cult song is possibly getting another big budget, American relaunch under the Legendary Pictures banner, the same fine folks who re-launched another languishing icon, Batman, for Warner Brothers in 2005. Could this be the film to launch Big G into the hearts and minds of a whole new generation of little big monster fans? Take a deep, irradiated breath and read more after the jump.

Details are scant at this point, but Bloody Digusting is reporting that Legendary is in talks to produce a new Godzilla reboot for American audiences. Godzilla’s cinematic history in the States has been tenuous at best over the last two decades. A Godzilla film was planned by Fred Dekker, of “Monster Squad” and “Night of the Creeps” fame in the late eighties, but was buried. The nineties saw a revived interest and a good script and even some early design work by Stan Winston delivered to Tri-Star before they ultimately decided to get in on some of that sweet “Independence Day” green and hired Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich to do a disaster movie version of the story. That film, referred to by some as GINO (Godzilla in Name Only), and referred to by me as “Godzilla Vs. Ferris Bueller”, went nowhere and even abandoned its sequel promise after a lackluster showing at the box office and a rejection by fans.  When the toys on store shelves aren’t getting touched, you messed up.

So here we go again. Can a Godzilla work across the Pacific? Absolutely. There are amazing opportunities for amazing, one-of-a-kind visuals, and for a fun, breathtaking adventure movie; Godzilla fights other monster. That’s what makes Godzilla fun and gets people in the door. Let Godzilla be Godzilla. I’m talking radioactive breath and everything.  Oh, and don’t make him overly sympathetic. I felt like I was watching “Old Yeller” at the end of Emmerich’s “Godzilla”. Keep all this in mind and with a good cast and solid filmmakers, this could be something special.

To Nicholas: If you can’t stand “Japanese Godzilla movies” – which means you can’t stand 28 out of the 29 movies starring a monster named “Godzilla” – then WTF are you commenting on this topic? Furthermore, you have absolutely HORRIBLE taste in film if you actually like the piece of crap called “Godzilla” that was released in 1998. You are obviously NOT a Godzilla fan and and therefore have absolutely NO BUSINESS expressing your opinion about him.

      • Nicholas

I liked the first one. The original. And I liked the 98 flick… And I express my opinion about ANY movies that I see fit. Just as you and everybody else expressed their dislike for the 1998 Godzilla movie… If you like campy cheesy monster fighting monster movies then good for you. I for one am thankful that they didn’t translate that Jap fest onto american screens…

Really? I’ve always liked Godzilla, was a favorite during my Childhood times i remember seeing ”Godzilla vs Biolante” and going Wow that was Awesome. Still a favorite till this day.

Godzilla 1998 was a average monster film, but it WASNT a Godzilla film. Should have been called ”The beast from 20,000 phatoms” which would have fit the title character perfectly.

Godzilla should have been more built, of course the classic fire breathe, and been pretty much ”almost” indestructible. Not totally though or else you’d have another Superman which we dont want.

If Legendary pictures makes another Godzilla, Make it a darker toned film. Make it actually ”Godzilla” and not a Giant T-Rex/Raptor. Have a decent plot and please take out the romance type things, God we have that in every film today. Godzilla is about Godzilla not to lovers or friends but about the creature and the destruction man brings upon himself.

If they can manage a good plot and make it complete chaos with Godzilla taking back his throne as king of the monsters and quite possibly add another monster without being to stupid then im 110% in support of this. Hope its good!

Long Live Godzilla King of the Monsters!

    Godzilla is not mindless.

Godzilla should be an intelligent creature.

Godzilla should be somewhat, if not overly, sympathetic. How can a giant movie icon not be?

To enjoy a movie like this, people need something to cheer for. That’s filmmaking 101. Who will the audience cheer for? The military? Godzilla? I say it’s Godzilla vs. an evil force. That means making the character of Godzilla somewhat sympathetic.

    This isn’t Michael Myers.

This is Godzilla — a creature that kids around the world have grown up cheering for.

Make Godzilla like Marvel’s Hulk character. Not evil, but too destructive to be called good.

Last but not least, Godzilla should look like Godzilla. Streamline the Toho version, make it quicker, but make it totally recognizable as Godzilla — same head, same spiked backplates, same roar, same blue atomic breath…

I argee with Mark ,if a new Godzilla movie comes out update Toho’s big G.Not the 98wimpasaurous rex.return.Eighter way,I’ll see it. But if it don’t look like Godzilla it isn’t Godzilla.98 was such a let down after the big hype of not showingthe monster in the trailers. The very limited trailer, and theatre release for 2000 brought back hope. After all “Final Wars” showed what happenes too cheep imatations.
With global warming a big concern,it could play into agood old style Godzilla slug fest.Glob warming awakens Godzilla , and causes the growth of some other type of monster.or something like that for a start.
anyway it’ll be nice too see a new G movie.

The new Godzilla should be based on the 1995 Godzilla vs Destroyah and the millenium Godzilla. Oh man, I love those sharp looking dorsal spikes! Also his trademark blue atomic breath. Oh and use the special effect of him sucking in air around him like in GMK: All Monsters Attack.

Also I think a nuclear story would be great since the global concern these days are countries with nuclear weapons. Imagine, the end of world war 3… when reconstruction of the economy begins rebuilding, countries are mysteriously attacked by a blueish atomic beam from the sea. Countries suspect each other… only to find out that it not who, but what. *Cue Godzilla cry* Aaaaaeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiiiiggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!

Also add another tough monster in there for Godzilla to fight. I would like to see Godzilla use his regeneration ability when he gets injured.

It would b awesome if they brought back the Big G. Legendary made a great choice when they brought back Batman.
Toho did make the perfect choice when they decided to bring their behemoth back after the 1998 butcher job Tri-Star did.
With the problems plaguing the world currently, like global warming, the could make it so that Global Warming awakens Godzilla from his sleep somewhere in the world. But also allow the chance for a new monster, one that has wanted to claim Earth for itself but couldn’t get past the O-Zone layer, finally arrive to lay waste, and only Godzilla can stop it, not the combined might of the World nations, and give Godzilla a chance to use his Organizer G-1 cells again.

IF legendary pictures does a godzilla movie, they should make it in the tone of Godzilla’s glory years: His premier movie and the 84-95 heisei series. Godzilla was dark, he was portrayed as an unstoppable force of nature, and it really brought the best of the human characters and the best foes he ever fought to the big screen. Legendary’s Godzilla should remind us why we once feared Godzilla, not why we laughed at him.

i think the movie should start by scientist taking a sample of godzilla’s remains and they revive 2 monsters a new monster and a new villian. then the scientist try to take constrol of both monsters but of course they lose controll and the new monster and villian monster are forced to fight each other at the end of the fight they both explode but moments later they fuse together and guess what??

GODZILLA IS REBORN!!!!!!! what u think huh??

    • yellow hornet

i think they should bring godzilla back as a dark force of nature born of nuclear fire and the super monster he is.

      • yellow hornet

They should make him like they did in gmk and godzilla final wars. As the king of monsters and so powerful that no other monster can stand against him and his radioactive fury. I’ll always remember the most important scene to me in a godzilla movie. In godzilla vs king ghidorah when they are fighting and godzilla uses his nuclear pulse to throw him back, then blasts one of king ghidorah’s heads off. that is what godzilla is to me. the unbeatable king of the monsters.

Stop being negative and critical like the media. We have waited too long for a Godzilla movie so let’s hope it comes soon. Bring it on!

If you have seen the 2nd trailer to Legendary pictures's new movie Clash of the Titans and look at how they did the effects – if – they stay to how Godzilla is suppose to look like, it could be a great movie with great effects!!!!

Agree. Godzilla should be the king and he needs to be who he is…

I doubt if Leegendary Pictures will be making a Godzilla movie seen that Toho studios owns therights of both Godzilla and the American 1998 so called Godzilla monster. Keep in mind Toho had Godzilla kill off the so called American Godzilla in the 2004 movie Godzilla Final Wars. What might be possible is if an American film compny were to distribute a new Godzilla movie produced by Toho studios in Japan.

i hate the godzilla roar now it sucks i hate you mark

I agree about updating Godzilla and not like that 1998 Godzilla. You can’t put that so-called Godzilla in the same in the same class. Keep Godzilla. In the same style original Japanese Godzilla and not that iguana. After all he is the KING OF THE MONSTERS.
