What’s a guy to do after he’s already done battle with a fully armored Tony Stark in Iron Man 2, teamed up with Stallone and Schwarzenegger in The Expendables, and led his fellow Greek Gods in a revolt against mankind in Immortals (a.k.a. War of the Gods)?
Why, return to the battle, of course! It seems safe to say that Mickey Rourke is experiencing more than just a comeback. His career’s second life is proving to be even more substantial than its first. In an interview with the Orlando Sentinel, Rourke revealed he may be taking on the role of one of the most infamous conquerors in history of the world: Genghis Khan. Hit the jump to find out what the always-eccentric Rourke had to say about his involvement in the film (which is being penned and directed by John Milius of Red Dawn fame) and also, for some more insight into his awkward obsession with dogs.
Although it’s not actually official, Rourke seemed really enthusiastic about taking on Milius’s script,
“I read his script and you know, the man is known for his tough writing. He wrote Conan and Dirty Harry and Apocalypse Now, and it’ll be interesting to see how he works behind the camera. I’m playing Genghis. John wrote it as a piece told from the son and grandson’s point of view, how they saw this mythic figure from their family. You see him in flashbacks, back when he was in his mid-40s. And back then, being in your mid-40s was being REALLY old.”
With Rourke as a choice to play Khan, the problem that immediately comes to mind is that Genghis Khan was Asian. The last time I checked, Mickey Rourke was not. This, however, does not seem to be of any concern to Rourke because, much like Genghis Khan, he is an excellent horseback rider:
“I rode quite a bit, back in the day. The horseback riding won’t be too much of a problem. I probably ride a horse better than I drive a car. There’s going to be some archery from horseback called for that I have to do, so that’ll be interesting, physically. I’ve got some very good stunt people that I work with almost exclusively.”
And another reason to completely forget about ethnicity is that fact that both Genghis Khan and Mickey Rourke love their dogs, apparently:
“One of the things I like about Genghis Khan was his love of dogs. The Mongols used dogs in battle, and dogs rarely made it out of the battle. But in one instance, in this script, he orders his men – ‘Hold the dogs back.’ He was looking out for the dogs. I like that.”
So to sum up, Mickey Rourke is not Asian, but he can pull off a mean horseback ride and and he really, really loves dogs. Obviously, no further preparation to play the role of the creator and leader of the Mongol Empire will be necessary. It’ll be really interesting to see if this rumor ends up being true.

Unfortunately, Hollywood persists on casting non-Asians for Asian roles…esp when it comes to male leads. Hollywood has a deplorable history of yellowface that continues today. But if they were to cast the next Martin Luther King, Jr. movie with a white man, I think the African-American community would be totally cool with one more case of blackface to one of their most beloved leaders, right?
Also, America has been dumbed down quite enough, and kids (even adults) tend to view historical dramas as fact. Do we really want people to start believing that it took a WHITE guy to bring together an army of Asians and become the fabled leader that conquered half the world?! Cuz that's what will happen!!
Hollywood is a load of bollocks anyway. Who bloody cares what they do about such historical figures. They will do what they have always done for decades and scar the rest of the worlds genuine historical ethnic figures to Caucasian centric because that is the audience they are catering to and it seems like this is another example of that.
Even an director of Asian descent has gone on to sing to their tune. Look at Shyamalan with the Airbender bit. None of those characters are Asian or maybe just one or just .5 of a person to make it legitimate.
Deplorable really and the madness will never stop because the ones lining the pockets of these people are those same delusional caucasians who think the world as they know it revolves and is populated by only one ethnicity and one that matters.
Its no wonder most students growing up are so keen on the slant because they saw it in a fictional movie…LOL!
I really hope this is isn't going to be sentimental hero worship. Seriously Genghis Khan was a monster.

Well, quite a few people care. The people over at MANAA (Media Action Network for Asian Americans) will certainly raise Hell and I can imagine the East West Players will care, seeing as how they're THE premier Asian-American acting troupe in the United States and they've been around for forty years.
And given the growing population of people of color, by 2040-2050, Caucasians will be the 'minority' in this country for the VERY FIRST TIME since Colonial days. Hollywood will HAVE to adapt to the changing times.
Explain to me how a Caucasian can 'pull off' the role of a historical Asian figure.
And DON'T tell me make-up. that would fall under yellow face, which is akin to Black face. Besides, have you ever seen any of those old movies where White people were dressed and made up to look like Asians??? They look so incredibly RIDICULOUS.

Asian Americans, please rise up and stop this atrocity. This is beyond racist and should not be tolerated. Asians have been in this country for over 150 years and for these Hollywood racists to commit this kind of racism is beyond insulting.

BTW, the new Karate Kid movie is Wrong on so many level. Why isn't an Asian kid the Karate kid. Why does the Karate Kid need to be white or black. It's freaking KARATE. They won't make a Hip Hop Kid movie or a Rock and Roll Movie and put an Asian guy as the lead, but these a holes won't have a problem making the Karate Kid anybody but a nonAsian.
