Production is currently underway on M. Night Shyamalan’s new sci-fi project After Earth, and the director and star Will Smith have been sharing a few photos from the set with fans eager to see how Shyamalan will ruin yet another movie. The good news is that Shyamalan got help on the script from Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli) and Stephen Gaghan (Traffic), so hopefully the story is being reigned in. Previously titled 1000 A.E., the film is set 1000 years in the future and centers on a young boy navigating “an abandoned and sometimes scary Earth to save himself and his estranged father after their ship crashes.” Smith stars alongside his son Jaden Smith, who toplined the recent Karate Kid remake. The premise is interesting enough and the inclusion of Gaghan gives me hope that maybe After Earth will serve as a much-needed comeback for the Signs director.

The photos don’t show anyone in costume, but we do get a look at the Smiths and Shyamalan on the gorgeous Costa Rica set. Shyamalan reveals through comments on the photos that this is the first film he’s shooting digitally and he’s using the Sony F65. Hit the jump to check out the photos. The film also stars Zoe Kravitz, Sophie Okonedo, and Isabelle Fuhrman. After Earth opens June 7th, 2013.

    Nepotism: The Movie?

      You mad bro?

      • C’mon Son

        Why u mad bro?

    • Goop

Most people get into their profession and move up within their profession due to nepotism or some similar form of “passing the torch” or favoritism. And I’m not exaggerating when I most people.

      • Strong Enough

        BUT you mad tho…?

      • Goop

Haha no man, I think this is ll a good thing. I was trying to explain to Mark that there’s nothing wrong with nepotism or similar forms of getting ahead (mentorship, favoritism, shit even interning). Successful people get started where they are because someone knew them and liked them enough to pass that torch.

Big fan of Will Smith, so here’s hoping Will is (once again) an ingredient guaranteeing a great movie.

  • ozzie

please stop letting wil smith make movies … he is the same character in all his movies.

    • Tim25

That can be said about all the arguably great actors: Tom Cruise, Harrison Ford, Al Pacino, etc. That doesn’t mean all their movies are bad. The movies just need to fit the same character they always do. Keanu Reeves is a horrible actor, but his style was perfect for films like The Matrix and horrible for things like Much Ado About Nothing. What made the actors great was they always placed themselves in projects that fit their skill set. That is something Will Smith is excellent at. Keanu Reeves, not so much.

      • Derek

        Whoa.

      • Justin

A friend of mine had an arguement about this…there are two types of actors the 1st being the same character in everymovie and the 2nd an actor who becomes the character…the best example of this is Ben Affleck and Matt Damon you may hate Ben but the dude has a great resume especially now directing and of course Matt Damon but it doesn’t mean one is better because on Ben’s side you have Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, Ryan Reynolds, Al Pacino, Robert Deniro, Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock, Jack Nicolson, etc. Where on the Matt Damon side you have Robert Downey Junior, Leo Dicaprio, Jude Law, Ed Norton, Ralph Fiennes, Charlize Theron, Hugh Jackman, etc. as you can see one side isn’t better its just different acting styles Certain actors as in the case of your problem with Keanu Reeves he isn’t a bad actor at all its just thats how he sounds…and seriously can u imagine someone better than Keanu to play Neo come on that was brilliant casting

    • Jon

I’ll give you Independence Day, MIB, and Bad Boys, but c’mon. His characters in Pursuitof Happyness, Ali, I am Legend, Seven Pounds and The Legend of Bagger Vance stand on their own.

I suppose when he’s playing cocksure, he plays it the same. But I don’t think it’s fair to say he’s the same in ‘every’ movie.

  • ALEX

Will Smith did some sick real acting when he did POH and 7Lbs then he went gay again and did MIB3, Hancock 2 in the works but this…this can be GREAT for not only him but SHYAMALAN who hasn’t made a great film since the Village. They both needa bounce back with something hard and this is it. Gaghan and Whitta wrote this script so I know its gonna be great, Shyamalan will REDEEM himself.

    • b

“…hasn’t made a great film since the Village.” hahaha

    • Warpcrafter

So, you’re saying MIB3 and Hancock are gay and 7Lbs isn’t? That was the second gayest movie of the decade. (Brokeback mountain being the first, of course…)

      • Jon

        *SPOILER ALERT*

        *SERIOUSLY*

So ridden with guilt and being forced to re-examine who you think you are what you think you’re worth, then utimately deciding to sacrifice yourself to change the lives of others is gay?

        Good grief.

Let’s not forget everyone was saying the same thing about The Last Airbender. “He’s basing it on actual existing material.” “How could Shyamalan screw this up?” Then all those racebending issues began to surface and the film ended up being pretty much shit. Let’s just face the truth: Shyamalan is a one-hit wonder. Let him prove me wrong.

      • Aurora Vampiris

One-hit wonder? I thought Unbreakable was brilliant. Not a box office hit, maybe, but it was awesome nonetheless. And of course, there’s Sixth Sense.

  • maryjanesuncle

    Shyamalan…place laugh track here

Shyamalan’s butchering of The Last Airbender has made him dead to me. Too many interesting directors, such as Duncan Jones, with good storytelling skills and style have come into play since The Sixth Sense. Shyamalan’s style doesn’t really interest me much anymore — wooden, overdone and he comes off as a bit of an idiot in interviews.

  • Junierizzle

I’ll always give M. Night the benefit of the doubt. Except for Airbender, I don’t care who was directing, that one just didn’t interest me at all. He still made three great movies in a row. Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and Signs.

I like Will Smith too. But if you think about it, dude has never made a truly great movie. He had a chance to make one with Tarantino but turned it down.

Here’s hoping this one is great for both of them.

Airbender aside (which wasn’t so much BAD as an incomprehensible mess), Shyalaman does know how to get good performances and good visual style.
The Smiths working together _does_ produce a good movie, and we know Jaden can hold his own (Karate Kid proved that).
Let’s just see how it pans out – I reckon this is the last dance saloon for M Night

Will Smith is a better actor than Keanu Reeves. I don´t think so.

    I think you are funny.

  • potterboy

so Will Smith skipped DJANGO for this, a bad ass role, written by QT with him in mind, and surrounded by cast of Leo Dicaprio, Christoph Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson… interesting.

  • Jeff

Crossing my fingers, but going in with low expectations. Shyamalan hasn’t made a good movie in almost 10 years.

Anybody wanna guess the ending? I’ll take a shot:

In the closing minutes of the film, the dying wasteland of Earth will be nothing more than Jaden’s science project submitted to his Jr. High science fair. He’ll will the first place ribbon and Will will beam with pride. FADE OUT.

  • BobLoblaw

Say what you want about Will Smith, but it is a fact that he is a major player in Hollywood, which makes it very surprising that he would attach his name to the sinking ship that is Shyamalan’s career.

If Night was a Scientologist (haha spell check doesn’t even recognize the word), then I would understand, but I don’t think he is.
