Will Smith Talks MEN IN BLACK 3, M. Night Shyamalan’s AFTER EARTH, His Love of STAR WARS and Future Projects

     May 22, 2012

Opening this weekend is the third film in the Men in Black franchise.  Barry Sonnenfeld returns as director and the story finds Will Smith’s Agent J travelling back in time to save Tommy Lee Jones’ Agent K.  In addition to Bill Hader as Andy Warhol, Josh Brolin plays a younger version of Jones’ character and does an incredible job.  You’ll absolutely think you’re watching Jones as a young man.  Men in Black 3 also stars Jemaine Clement, Alice Eve, and Emma Thompson.  In addition, make-up effects artist Rick Baker returns to the franchise and you can see some of his creature work here.  For more on the film, here’s all our previous coverage.

Last week I got to speak with most of the cast and every day this week I’ll be posting a new interview.  Yesterday was Tommy Lee Jones and today I’ve got Will Smith.  During the interview we talked about when he knew they could make another Men in Black, the impact Star Wars had on him as a kid, how many takes he likes to do, and more.  In addition, we talked about future projects like M. Night Shyamalan‘s After Earth, and I tried to get updates on Independence Day 2, Bad Boys 3, I Am Legend 2 and Hancock 2.   Hit the jump to watch.

Will Smith

  • I start off by telling him how happy I am that he’s back making movies
  • What are some of his favorite movies. Talks about the impact Star Wars had on him
  • Star Wars or The Empire Strikes Back?
  • When did he know they could make a third film
  • How many takes does he like to do
  • Any update on Independence Day 2, Bad Boys 3, I Am Legend 2 and Hancock 2. He says no, yes, no and yes.  Meaning the two that might be going are Bad Boys 3 and Hancock 2

i dare any journalist to ask him about DJANGO. why he turned it down!

    • Tey

      a) He doesn’t want his kids to watch a sensitive film like this.

b)He doesn’t like to be called nigga!

Take your pick… just kidding! Maybe it’s too offensive! even Kevin Costner turned down a role…

      • Clark Griswold

Smith is only interested in playing vanilla, righteous characters. He demands that every script he’s involved with gets rewritten to adhere to “The Moral Premise”. Obviously that didn’t fly with QT (and interestingly, Smith hasn’t worked with a major clout director since Bay/Mann 10 years ago).

  • jack

Big Willie is too image conscious to take a risk…i really hope bad boys 3 comes to fruition though

Mike Lowery: [singing] Bad boys, bad boys what ya gonna do? What ya gonna do when we come for you?
[Marcus starts ad-libbing the first verse]
Dude, you gotta learn the words.
We usually only do the chorus.
    Best lines in both movies.

  • Roger

Dude in every one of your interviews, you say you are asking such an original and different question but you never do. Just start asking ?s for god’s sake. Don’t try to be more than what you are…it just comes off as fake and pathetic. I could never do what you do..takes some skills and you are talented but you need a reality check in certain areas.

    • Brandon

Sounds like a hater move to me. I like his questions….

      • paul tracy

totally agree with Roger. My allegiance to Collider doesn’t make me sound like a bias outsider (sorry Brandon). “Favorite Movie” is neither interesting or unique. Black Nail Polish…Let’s get it together and grow up, Collider. Love you/Hate you. We’ll figure it out…together.

Glad he bigged up Star Wars, over Empire. I love Empire and yes its the better film, infact the whole OT is brilliant (even the Ewoks! so suck it!)

But Star Wars is the most iconic, and its THE film that changed the world of movies. Even Ridley Scott said Star Wars made him want to make Alien. Its also the most quote able film ever made.

    • tarek

True. I watched star wars more than 100 times, while I watched ESB maybe 6 or 7 times.

But damned! Luca$ destroyed all the myth of star Wars with his silly vision on the backgroung and the mythologie of star wars…Midichlorians ? Really ? are you okay George? Who hit you on your head ?

  • mattinacan

I hope he wasn’t referring to Bad Boys 3, the last thing we need is another one of those awful movies. Good luck getting Hancock 2 off the ground after Peter Berg just sunk his career with Battleship.

I actually worked with Will and Jaden on After Earth. Find me on Twitter….kbtheaspiring.
