We have state secrets that haven’t been kept as well as the mystery surrounding James Cameron’s “Avatar”. I understand that it’s bigger than we can comprehend. His last film was “Titanic” which is the highest-grossing film of all-time, ties with “Ben Hur” and “Return of the King” for most Oscars, and he hasn’t done a non-documentary film in the twelve years since. Oh, and it’s in Digital 3D that’s supposed to change the way we see movies forever.
But we will finally get some kind of look at the thing on June 26th when the trailer gets paired with “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” and I think…this can’t be right. I know MarketSaw is saying they have two reliable sources backing it up and that the audience that turns out for “Transformers” is probably the one that turns out for “Avatar” but…it just doesn’t compute. A week later Fox, which is also releasing “Avatar”, has “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs” hitting theatres in Digital 3D, the same format as “Avatar”. While it’s not the same audience, I imagine folks would pay money to see the third “Ice Age” movie just to get a look at the Avatar trailer. Fox can’t expect people to shell out money for 3D glasses just to get a look at a trailer and then take them off for the movie they paid to see. You’d basically be paying five extra bucks for, at most, two and a half-minutes of footage. And why would Paramount (who is releasing “Transformers”) allow that? “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” will open huge without a trailer for “Avatar”.
So what if the trailer is only in 2D? Why would James Cameron, who has been hyping this film as the 3D motion picture that will make you climax non-stop, allow the first look at his film to be only in 2D. He hasn’t even released photos that aren’t from behind-the-scenes. Are we to believe that he’s going to finally allow his first look at his return to cinema in a format he didn’t intend?

Let's be honest. They want that trailer out there. Why not attach it to a movie that is sure to draw a huge audience of potential viewers. As you mentioned, Ice Age 3 is hardly the target audience. If anything, it would have been genius to attach it to Up, as Pixar has a tendency to draw both young and old, and everywhere in between.
I doubt he is so adamant that he only wants his trailer to be shown in 3D. After all, it WILL hit the internet and that is typically a 2D display format.
