William Shatner Talks ESCAPE FROM PLANET EARTH, THE BIG BANG THEORY, His 2013 Projects, STAR TREK/STAR WARS, Priceline, and More

     February 15, 2013

Now playing in theaters is the 3D animated feature, Escape from Planet Earth.  The story centers on some aliens who get captured during a mission to Earth and are tossed into the secure holding site of Area 51, but they quickly find that they are not alone.  Escape From Planet Earth features the voices of Rob Corddry, Brendan Fraser, Sarah Jessica Parker, William Shatner, Jessica Alba, Jane Lynch, Sofia Vergara, Craig Robinson, George Lopez, Steve Zahn, Chris Parnell, Ricky Gervais and Jonathan Morgan Heit.

During the recent Los Angeles press day, I landed an exclusive video interview with Shatner (who voices General Shanker).  During the interview we talked about making Escape From Planet Earth, why he wanted to do a voice, will he ever do a guest spot on The Big Bang Theory, what’s it like for him when he attends conventions, what his schedule is like nowadays as he’s working on a wide variety of projects, why Star Trek and Star Wars have stood the test of time, does he get free flights via Priceline, and so much more.  Hit the jump to watch.

William Shatner:

  • Does he read a lot of the movie websites. Talks about social networks.
  • Why did he want to be involved with Escape From Planet Earth
  • How did the script change during production
  • How many takes does he like to do
  • Will he ever do a guest spot on The Big Bang Theory
  • What’s the one thing he can’t live without when working
  • What is it like for him when he attends a convention.  Also, what do people want to talk about
  • What’s his schedule like nowadays
  • What’s coming up in 2013. Another album, another book, horse riding, a documentary and more
  • Does he get free flights from Priceline
  • What is it about Star Wars and Star Trek that has stood the test of time.  Also talks about J.J. Abrams and why his film works

Chris pine and the rest of the remake, fake enterprise crew are shit! Terrible actors and actresses.

William Shatner is Kirk and will always be Kirk, Shatner is awesome!

Star Trek – The Original Series, Star Trek – The Next Generation, Star Trek – Deep Space Nine, Star Trek – Voyager, Star Trek – Enterprise, Star Trek – The Animated Series, Star Trek – The Motion Picture, Star Trek II – The Wrath Of Khan, Star Trek III – The Search For Spock, Star Trek IV – The Voyage Home, Star Trek V – The Final Frontier, Star Trek VI – The Undiscovered Country, Star Trek – Generations, Star Trek – First Contact, Star Trek – Insurrection, and Star Trek – Nemesis are all Star Trek, REAL Star Trek, Canon Star Trek.

JJ abrams abomination star trek remake and remake sequel are fakes and not canon. His star wars fake movies will be shit too.

Star Trek is dead, Star Wars is dead, doctor who is dead, batman is dead, james bond is dead.

    • Stacey

Agreed 100% with what you said. I will also add that anything disney is dead like Pirates Of The Caribbean, simply because they chose a hack job jj to direct some fake star wars flops.

      • jake ss

anything the hack jj abrahms touches turns to turds. Can’t polish a turd.

    • Shaun

Although I generally agree with what you say, I can’t exactly abide with the love for Voyager, Enterprise, or most of the TNG movies. Shatner was, by far, the best part of Generations, and while First Contact was good fun both Insurrection and (especially) Nemesis were pretty awful. For me, the last great Star Trek was DS9.

But I have no desire to see J.J.’s Star Trek again. “Into Darkness” looks like it has potential, but I just don’t like what J.J. did to Star Trek in the previous movie and I just think he’s going to mess this one up too. Shatner will always be Kirk, Pine is just a pretty boy pretender.

    • Tarek

Get down from the tree now. It is safe.

    • Shaun

Also, I love Nolan’s first two Batman movies but he completely shit the bed with TDKR… And I disagree about Bond. I’m not a huge fan, but Craig’s Bond is the best since Connery and he’s actually got me interested in Bond for the first time since I was a kid. I felt like I outgrew Bond, but now he’s grown up too.

The jury’s still out on Star Wars. While I despise J.J.’s Trek, I’ll keep an open mind towards his version of SW. At least he comes into SW an actual fan of the material (unlike Trek, which he admitted he wasn’t a fan of).

Anything damon lindelof touches turns to turds as well, he and jj share a bed and suckk each others disgusting balls, that explains the gay remake spock hair cut and the gay looking space jockeys. In remake star wars fake films, everything is going to be gay in it, especially with the gay looking lens flares crap. Gay jj and damon.
disney is going to regret this, just like paramount and 20th century fox should already regret it.

Abrams Star Trek was the movie that reconciliates me with the star trek universe. It was brilliant.
Nolan has pulled the batman franchise out of the mire. He is a genius.

We are in 2013 boys. Wake up and move along.

    • Nerdgasm

TO call Nolan a genius is pretty outlandish. The batman films (Though better than the Burton era) are wrought with film making mistakes and dumb plot holes that are GAPING.

JJ Did a great job revitalizing both Trek and Mission Impossible.

Danial Craig brought Bond back from the Dead….i don’t get those bipolar people at the top. seems way to over the top to yell about.

    • mellisa M

wow you know nothing of batman and star trek or star wars, wake up and get your facts straight, you know nothing. jj’s star trek was not star trek, nolans batman was not batman hate to think what jj’s fake star wars is going to be, but i know it will be shiit

      • Tarek

Ok genius, we know nothing, and you are an expert in batmanology and a die hard trekkie. I’m all ears. Explain to us what makes Nolan’s take on Batman or abrams star trek an heresy for your brilliant mind.
You call call your comrades frekkies to help you genius.

  • Bob

Ok, TDK is a masterpiece plain and simple. Great story, statight up all star cast with one of the best vilains of all time, and a perfect atmosphere that feels perfectly dark and realistic. Batman Begins is a pretty great film, and TDKR was a decent/good film.

Star Trek was a fantasic film. People that don’t like it are nerds who like there movies nerdy and not fun for anyone else. Sorry but its the truth. Movie had good acting from the entire cast and they all played interesting characters, great action, amazing special effects, and a cool time travel storyline. Its just a very fun movie that doesn’t insult your inteligence. An amazing blockbuster film.

Thats my input on what everone on this comment section seems to be talking about.

    • Nate

Yeah, I agree with your views on JJ’s Star Trek. It’s a great blockbuster movie. I think people just forget how awful some of the previous Star Trek movies are.

  • Strong Enough

wow its like a whining virgin center in here. look at all these hilarious comments hating on J.J.

Star Trek (2009) is a perfect blockbuster movie. i mean it has a 95 percent on RT. that is unheard of now a days with summer movies. J.J. knows what he is doing. He knows film and what it takes to make an entertaining movie. All you f&cks stay with nemesis if you want lmaoo

  • John

I think calling the lunatics at the top “nerds” is insulting to the nerds and geeks who enjoy sci-fi movies, and space/time-travel stories.

The people who are calling reboots “fake” or “dead” are a bit misguided in the overly aggressive expressing of their opinions. I sincerely doubt they could create an entertaining story let alone a movie that uses 40 year-old (or older) characters that have had many previous iterations that would captivate a whole new generation of fans. To those freaking out: If you don’t like it, don’t watch it. and you never know what a person or director or writer might do. Hyperbole just makes you look and sound ridiculous.
