Considering Netflix’s original series, acquisitions, and catalog of streaming content, the platform is aiming to be your one-stop shop for all conceivable genres of TV and movie entertainment. The company’s latest pickup to rollout this year is Stranger Things, a supernatural mystery series that brings to mind the cult classic thrillers of the same vein that were seemingly everywhere in the 1980s.
Set in that decade, Stranger Things features a cast led by Winona Ryder, Matthew Modine, and David Harbour, who are all involved in the strange disappearance and resulting search for a missing boy. Ryder, playing the boy’s mother, doggedly pursues answers in hopes of finding him alive but a series of increasingly mysterious events lead her down a dangerous path. It’s a series that hails from the folks who brought you Wayward Pines so if you’re a fan, this show should be in your wheelhouse. Look for it on Netflix starting July 15th.
Here’s the synopsis for Netflix’s Stranger Things, followed by the first images:
Sometimes the truth can be stranger than fiction…
Set in Hawkins Indiana in the 1980’s, Stranger Things chronicles the search for a young boy who vanishes into thin air under highly suspicious circumstances. His mother (Winona Ryder) opens an investigation into the boy’s disappearance with local authorities that unravels a series of mysteries involving top-secret government experiments, terrifying supernatural forces and one very strange little girl. A love letter to the ubiquitous cult classics of the 80’s, Stranger Things is a coming of age story for three boys that draws this quaint community into a world where mysteries lurk beneath the surface.
Starring Winona Ryder, Matthew Modine, David Harbour, Charlie Heaton, Natalia Dyer, and Millie Brown, Stranger Things is executive produced by The Duffer Brothers (Wayward Pines), Shawn Levy (Night at The Museum), and Dan Cohen (Story of Your Life).
