Richard E. Grant is well known around the British acting scene, but I will forever link him to his role of Jasper, Jessa’s coked-out rehab buddy on HBO’s Girls. Even now as he joins the cast of Wolverine 3, it looks like he’ll be bringing some of this character’s spirit into his new persona.

No, whomever Grant is playing in the James Mangold film, he probably won’t be running around a post-apocalyptic wasteland jabbering a million miles a minute about whatever insane ramblings pop into his head. But he’ll be mad. According to THR, Grant joins the cast as “a villainous mad-scientist type,” though all other details are unknown at this time. Grant joins the previously cast Patrick Stewart, reprising his role of Professor Xavier, and NarcosBoyd Holbrook, playing Jackman’s nemesis.

Very little is known about the third Wolverine film. Jackman teased the Old Man Logan story line from the comics, which sees the adamantium-clawed mutant traversing a post-apocalyptic world. Elsewhere, Liev Schreiber said he at least spoke with the powers that be about reprising his role of Sabretooth in the film, though there hasn’t been any confirmation on his involvement, and a recent rumor suggests the similarly clawed X-23 will be making an appearance. As confirmed by the latest X-Men: Apocalypse trailer, Wolverine will be making an appearance in Bryan Singer’s film, before making his final performance as Logan in Wolverine 3.

While the development of the latest sequel can be enticing, I’m glad in many ways that Jackman is hanging up his claws. That X-Men Origins: Wolverine film was a bust, and while Mangold’s The Wolverine was entertaining, it doesn’t immediately pop when I think of the greatest superhero films, especially now when there are so many. The character was even prominent in the core X-Men films, and there’s just so many stories to tell before you get bored. I can only hope that Mangold’s Wolverine 3 will send the character out with a glorious bang.

The film is scheduled to hit theaters on March 3, 2017.
