Hugh Jackman is strapping on the claws as Logan one last time for 20th Century Fox’s upcoming Wolverine 3. With Production reportedly set to begin next month, the latest installment in the mutant’s long saga has been casting up with additions including Richard E. Grant as an unnamed “Mad Scientist”, Narcos star Boyd Holbrook as the film’s main villain, another nameless character described as “a relentless, calculating and intense head of Security for a global enterprise who is set against Jackman’s clawed Wolverine/Logan hero,” and now Stephen Merchant, who Deadline reports has joined as a character that isn’t just nameless, but a complete mystery without so much as a brief descriptor.
The actor and writer is best known for his comedic work — primarily the fruits of his longtime collaboration with Ricky Gervais including The Office, which he co-created along with Life’s Too Short, and The Ricky Gervais Show. He also created and starred in the HBO series Hello Ladies.
Confirmed details on Wolverine 3 are incredibly scarce at the moment, though we do know Patrick Stewart will reprise his role as Professor Charles Xavier, and recent rumors have pointed to the inclusion of X-23. Jackman has teased the Old Man Logan arc a few times now, and according to Sabretooth actor Liev Schrieber, Jackman name dropped the iconic comic run when he “talked” about the possibility of Sabretooth’s return. The Wolverine helmer James Mangold returns to direct and worked closely with Jackman crafting the treatment, with David James Kelley penning the final script.
Wolverine 3 is scheduled to arrive in theaters March 3rd, 2017, but you won’t have to wait that long to get your Wolvie fix. As confirmed by the latest X-Men: Apocalypse trailer, Wolverine will be making an appearance in one last X-Men film, before making his final performance as Logan in Wolverine 3.
