Back in May, we reported that Chris Pine was in talks to play love interest Steve Trevor in Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman movie. In the comics Trevor is an intelligence officer who crash lands on Wonder Woman’s home of Paradise Island, and she follows him back to America.

The Wrap is now reporting that Pine has closed his deal to play Trevor and star opposite Gal Gadot in the film. Although there are currently no plot details, The Wrap reports that “Steve Trevor will be no mere love interest for Gadot’s Diana Prince, as there will be plenty of action to keep him busy.” As long as he’s a well-written character, I’m happy, and while he can have plenty of action, I doubt he’s going to upstage Wonder Woman unless he now has superpowers.

But what about Green Lantern? Pine was rumored for a role in Green Lantern Corps, but The Wrap claims those rumors were just a smokescreen. I’m not exactly sure why you need a smokescreen of any kind for casting rumors. Either an actor is playing a role or he/she isn’t. If anything, it muddies the issue to start gauging fan reaction and seeing if people are up on the actor playing a different role. Pine’s a likable actor, but there wasn’t a gigantic groundswell of support to have him play Hal Jordan or Guy Gardner.

I’ll be very curious to see how the dynamic between Trevor and Wonder Woman plays out, especially as two of this summers best blockbusters—Mad Max: Fury Road and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation—derive part of their strength from male-female co-leads. However, those are both sequels, and I really want Wonder Woman to get her chance to shine.

Wonder Woman opens June 23, 2017. Pine is currently filming on Star Trek Beyond and will next be seen in theaters in Z for Zachariah and The Finest Hours.
