Focus Features has released the Won’t You Be My Neighbor? trailer. Directed by Morgan Neville (20 Feet from Stardom), the movie focuses on the unlikely success and lasting impact of Fred Rogers and his TV program Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. The trailer, rather than just hitting on the greatness of Mr. Rogers, leans into aspects some people may not know, like how his show dealt head-on with difficult topics like the Vietnam War and the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy.

I caught the movie at Sundance earlier this year and absolutely loved it. What makes the documentary work so well is that it tries to get an understanding of Rogers, his morality, his legacy, and his place in American history. Yes, there’s a lot of love for his work, but Neville tries to go deeper so that it’s not simply a fan film devoted to Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. It’s richer and more fulfilling than that. It will also likely make you weep at the sheer, unadulterated kindness Rogers had for the world, so just be prepared to bring some tissue with you to the theater.
