The first trailer for director Marc Forster’s zombie apocalypse film World War Z has been released.  Things go to Hell rather quickly for the Lane family when the zombie apocalypse wreaks havoc on an otherwise mundane rush hour.  I get that Forster is accentuating the “world” aspect of the film and certainly establishes the pandemic as a global event, but the cut of the trailer paints the horde of the undead as more of an overwhelming flood observed from a bird’s eye view.  I’m hoping to see a little more of the immediate danger, but this glimpse certainly gets the heart pumping.  (I think we’ve all had enough of the Zimmer horns though…)

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film stars Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, Matthew Fox, James Badge Dale, and David MorseWorld War Z opens on June 21st, 2013.

Here’s a synopsis for World War Z:

The story revolves around United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Pitt), who traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatening to decimate humanity itself.  Enos plays Gerry’s wife Karen Lane; Kertesz is his comrade in arms, Segen.

Looks pretty good. I love the look of the zombie hordes. I would have liked to see some more up close and personal zombie action but I guess they wanted to capture the scope of the movie with this first trailer.

    Holy CGI zombies Batman!

  • Romsy

Why even call it WWZ when there is nothing in common with the book except zombies?

  • Gerd

I had high hopes , but it looks bad . The way the zombies move is totally unreal , okay i accept that they can run , but at least make them run like normal people , 28 week later style . These zombies look like are fater and the part where they climb each other is totally unrealistic , as i said the way they move is totally unrealistic

    • Really?

Yes the movie about Zombies taking over the world is unrealistic (SMH)

      • Anonymous

        this your missing his point…..

      • Gerd

yeah like i didn’t know that , thanks for reminding me that zombies do not exist .

What i meant with that is that it is infuckingpossible to do that . Even if we assume that the virus that turned them into zombies enhanced their speed/strength (because no normal human can do those things) it is still impossible to move like they do , it is against the laws of physics . That is what i meant by unrealistic

      • Steve

And yet we accept all kinds of outlandish suspension of disbelief when the story demands it. I’m sorry but the entire notion of dead tissue returning to life to hunt and eat the living goes against the very laws of physics, nature, (take your pick), but what matters is not whether it can happen but rather whether the rules are made clear in the service of the story and the story adheres to those rules. We all need to see WWZ before we can conclude that the film fails in this respect. I am continually amazed at what people will obsess over in the never ending chorus of “That sucked!” that the Internet provides on a daily basis. (and what gets a free pass)

I feel bad for Max Brooks. Having such a fantastic book turned into bland action with no trace of the original content must sting a bit.

Though I can’t say I’m surprised that they guy who helped ruin Quantum of Solace has done a number on this too.

    World war Zzzzzzzz…

I think you just wrote the headline for 75% of the reviews this movie will have.

        Hahaha! Agreed.

Looks good, It’ ll work for me!
Up still 1am to see this ;)

  • Brett

    I liked it.

  • S.H.I.E.L.DON COUPEUR

It looks like everybody here actually knows some zombies…
-They don’ t run like this !
-They don’ t move like that !
Stop the BS, go see it or don’ t, It’ s just fictionnal, there’ s no z-walk manual yet, so Foster make them move faster or slower as he wants.
    ** sorry for my english**

    • Rhys

The reason they are all saying that is because this movie is meant to be based off a book they bought the rights to named World War Z and in that they are slow. Its just really irking a lot of fans that were excited about this movie for the movie makers to just use the name but nothing from the book, besides zombies of course.

I may still see this film though as long as i think of it as separate from the book, I’ve seen movies come back from worse trailers.

    • agent_black

Erm… basic human biology, there is no way the human body, dead or alive could do those things. It’s just physically impossible.

      That’s why it sucks balls.

      • Steve

So, the lesson to be learned here: throw out the biology book that prohibits dead people from reanimating enough to eat living beings, but be sure you keep your physics book handy when you decide how those already-impossible movie creations can or cannot move. Got it.

  • Stone

Does anybody notice the World War Z trailer sounds and is cut almost like the Transformers 3 trailer. They even have the same rhythm of the horns and drum beats.

  • Bryan Mueller

Wow they really screwed the pooch on this one! A tidal wave of zombies… come on!
Sure you want to set yourself apart from other zombie movies but that looks so stupid!

  • Matty

Matthew Fox getting them off the island…I mean roof…

  • Nate

I think the trailer looks pretty good. The zombies look a little over the top, but at least it’s different from the style of other zombie movies. (Yet, I have never read the book, so I really can’t say to much)

  • zac

first off, the studio knows how bad this is hence why they went for the minimalistic poster! second, brad pitt knows how bad this is, he doesn’t want his face on the poster (since when) third marketing department knows how bad this is there’s no “a marc forster film” or “from director of quantum of solace” hahaha

p.s and everyone still bags out michael bay, yet if he made this it would prolly be a huge hit! but no let’s get an auter to handle big budget (ang lee anyone hulk?)

    • Nerdgasm

Forster was fired. they cant use his name in marketing. this is a teaser poster as well as a teaser trailer as well…doesnt come till next summer. you are an idiot. go away.

  • Forsters Beer

I have a feeling this is meant to be a prequel to the book World War Z. As a fan of the book that’s what I’m hoping for at least. Then a good tv series that follows the book.

Looks to me that most of the CGI for this film is still in the works… A lotta PITT, very little zombie one on one action. Loved the book. And Brad Pitt so I’m holding out hope on this one. I wanna be amazed, THE WALKING DEAD on a global scale

  • Strong Enough

    June 21? I’m there.

  • Lob Taylor

All I can say is WOW! take my Imax money already!!!!!!!!

  • Mrperfect

Yea, another waaahhh trailer. Wow, guess I’ll have to see it!

  • Conan the Barbarian

The trailer did a terrible job letting the viewer know they were zombies. The only reason i knew they were zombies was from what i read before the trailer. Overall looks cool and im down for the fast zombies, its something different.

think you missed his point….go have fun with some playdoh

  • Mrgiles

Ugh…this is worse than I thought. The zombies running over the bus and down the stairs….could that look any dumber? I loved the book so I am pissed that they have destroyed it, but forget that for a minute. The zombie CGI is ridiculous. I hate fast zombies, but you can make them at least look like the people from 28 days later or the remake of dawn of the dea, or even zombieland.

At best I might pirate this after it is out on DVD.

Major movie star in apocalyptic landscape (Check)
Respected actors/actresses in surely underused supporting roles (Check)
What began as an adaptation of an original and respected novel becomes a de facto “slightly based” plot but keeping the title to ensure a certain glimmer of that originality and respect even after Lindelof’s intervention (Check)
Excesive, bizarre, way too much use of CGI (Check)
    Troubled production (Check)
    Over budget (Check)
    Hack director (Check)
Inception style music tones to create a “mood” (Check)
Fastest moving dead corpses a.k.a. zombies in movie history (Check)
Considering the previous items and that the Like/Disclike Ratio of the trailer in YT is around 30% (which is huge) and the negativity of most comments in this and other forums unless something VERY surprising occurs we can proclaim that there is a serious candidate for the “2013 Biggest Bomb” title. This movie has an uphill battle.

  • Rick

I’ve made comments at a bunch of other places about how piss poor the effects look in this, how it’s nothing like the book, and yada yada, all the complaints you’ve already read above.

But just in case you still think this movie is worth seeing…ask yourself this simple question…what the fuck good is one man in that situation?? They show multiple cities being literally flooded (haha, seriously the CGI is god-awful) with zombies/bulls on parade…and indicate that millions are dying by the second.

What good is one guy? What’s his mission? To go to the well at the end of Lost and put the plug back in the jug?

Is he trying to read from the Necronomicon cuz Ash screwed up the three words???

Fuck this movie. It may be a zombie movie about a war of zombies on the world, but it is not World War Z.

  • Nicholas Reynolds

So what your telling us is that they did everything Right!

  • Jamesy

As for as being an adaption of the original source, it looks like it’s done a bad job. But for a movie/zombie movie, it look’s pretty exciting, I actually like the fast moving zombies it brings something different. Every other zombie movie, tv show conveys the zombies as slow moving( where you could just jump in a car or run away) posing no real danger, where as with this it looks as if you really are in trouble and the trailer does a decent job at exciting the audience. Foster might not be the best director for this and I can see the over use of cgi but it does look like he’s going for a HUGE global zombie movie, i.e epic.

  • Old Kentucky Shark

This movie will be a complete departure from the book. Anyone hoping for the opposite will be very disappointed. For a compare and contrast, I suggest those wishing for a faithful book adaptation should listen to the “Audio Book” version. A giant cast of voice actors do an amazing job. It will help you forget about how bad this movie is going to be.

Poor Philly skyline. Can’t seem to get a good movie filmed that features it, since Rocky!

First off, dumbasses: Marc Forster was NOT fired from World War Z & Max Brooks (writer of the book; wrote the screenplay to the movie!). All of you just latch onto Internet rumors & make them bible. Secondly, the movie looks like a lot of fun. I’m sick of zombie movies that show you one small town overrun with slow walking zombies. It’s exciting to up the stakes and show the zombie infestation on a global scale. All of you pathetic haters need to shut up. If you don’t wanna see it. Don’t see it.

I wanted to see something like Children of Men + Zombie Apocalypse with Brad Pitt. But what i saw from this trailer… its awful. And where is the work of Robert Richardson there? He is one of the greatest DP in world of cinema.

Where did the truck come from? There wasn’t enough room for it to drive threw the traffic. If it was pushing cars out of the way, you would think someone would have heard that and turned around.

Straczynski’s original script is online somewhere…I forget the link. Max Brooks really loved it but then it got rewritten. It was really good and pretty true to the book. I do not see why it had to be re-written by three other writers when it would have worked and been a totally different take on the genre.

  • Zachrifice

its pretty much predictable at this point how you can count on all the hipsters and cinephile snobs to hate on everything that comes out thats not directed by Nolan. I’m not defending this film just making a general appraisel.

Its even more hilarious that as much as they bitch and complain, they always end up seeing the film eventually at some point.

  • Kron

It’s a shame, as generic and actiony as this seems to have been made it could have been a watchable z-flick unfortunately they had to name it World War Z without taking into account ANYTHING that made the books work. I don’t mind the focus on a single character or an ‘in the moment’ look at the zombie pandemic as opposed to the mockumentary approach. It can work and Hollywood seems to lack confidence with anything else. But running zombies? weightless Olympians that are so badly CGI’d as to be laughable instead of scary? Did they read either of the books? The Max Brooks fiction has some incredibly specific rules about how zombies work, why the world was overrun, our complete failure at every level of society to deal with this until it was too late. What we get instead is a generic action film that is all about ” ‘Murica savin da wurld frahm zahmbeez!”
If you wanted to lure out the World War Z fans with this film, just making it as it was with any other title would have worked, some people don’t like fast zombies but if your fiction is good enough to explain it or the action is flashy enough people will come over for a look.
Instead they’ve taken an intelligent and well thought out piece of fiction, gutted it for its title and expect a pat on the back for their effort.

Calling this a film ‘based on the book’ is an outright lie, this is a film borrowing the title of the book in hopes of more money at box office.
