Writer David Self Says Darren Aronofsky Still on ROBOCOP Reboot

     February 10, 2010

When we last reported on director Darren Aronofsky and screenwriter David Self’s reboot of Paul Verhoven’s Robocop, the project had apparently slammed into neutral over Aronofsky’s refusal to acquiesce to MGM’s request that the new film be in 3D.  But speaking to ShockTillYouDrop last night at the Wolfman premiere, Self says that Aronofsky’s still on board.  Here’s what Self had to say:

“I’m still involved with it and Darren Aronofsky’s still involved with it.  He’s making another movie right now (Black Swan), but we’re waiting for MGM, to sort things out since they’re a large corporation and it’s a situation where we have to be practical. We’re waiting to continue with them, we hope that that happens soon and we can get back to it soon.”

That seems like a reasonable roadblock since MGM’s financial situation is such a mess and no one wants to invest in a new film, especially one with a brand like Robocop, if they’re not sure they can get it to completion.  They’re already in tricky  situations with The Hobbit and Bond 23.  But it is good news that Aronofsky is still on board because he could create something fresh with the character rather than just restore the Robocop franchise.
