Bad news, X-Men fans: The first reviews for X-Men: Apocalypse are in and they are, let’s say, less than positive, which is not something you want to hear from a film that adapts one of the most important story arcs in the comics. If you still want to ignore the chatter until the time comes for you to make your own judgement, then let’s keep the good vibes going with a new clip from the film showing how Scott Summers became Cyclops.
As we’ve seen in previous films from the franchise, discovering you’re a mutant isn’t always a fun experience. Rogue’s first kiss put her boyfriend in a coma, Angel self-mutilated himself at the risk of revealing his wings to his dad, and Wolverine ended up killing his birth father. Although, thanks to Days of Future Past, it’s unclear whether these moments are still canon. Regardless, Tye Sheridan’s Scott has a similarly humiliating experience when he unleashes hell from his eyes on a jock in school.

You can already tell that this version of Scott begins as a bit of a bad boy before he eventually grows to becoming the leader of the X-Men. During our visit to the set, we learned that he becomes a bit of an instigator at Xavier’s School for Gift Youngsters, and Sheridan went into further detail:
Everyone’s a different person when they’re younger. You evolve as a human being with knowledge and attitude and challenges and obstacles in life and so, I feel like the younger—it’s the younger version of Cyclops; why is he the way he is in the first two or three movies that he’s in? What made him that guy? What obstacles did he go through to get to that point? And that’s kind of what I get to explore in this.
X-Men: Apocalypse will hit theaters on May 27th.
