First we found out that Ben Hardy scored a “key, as-yet-undisclosed” role in X-Men Apocalypse and the EastEnders actor happens to look a lot like Warren Worthington III, so many instantly assumed he’d be playing Angel. Next, director Bryan Singer shared this production art further suggesting that Hardy is indeed playing the winged mutant. Now it’s confirmed. Singer told Empire that Hardy is playing Angel in the film and also teased what we can expect from the character:

“Ben Hardy is Angel – I shall confirm it for you! But he’s not a very nice Angel! And that’s all I’ll say…”

On top of that, Empire also shared two pieces of Angel concept art that show the character with a completely different set of wings than the ones Ben Foster rocked in X-Men: The Last Stand. In fact, they look a lot like metal wings, which suggest we could see Archangel in the film.

In the comics, Angel’s wings are mutilated and amputated, but Apocalypse (played by Oscar Isaac in the film) offers him an opportunity to get them back. Angel agrees to become one of his four Horsemen, a group of genetically modified mutants who serve Apocalypse, and, in turn, Apocalypse gives him organic metal wings. Is that the version of the character we’ll see in X-Men: Apocalypse? It certainly seems like we'll see him in that form at some point.

X-Men: Apocalypse is due in theaters on May 19, 2016 and also stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Alexandra Shipp and Kodi Smit-McPhee.
