Back in November news broke that Bryan Singer was testing actors for the roles of young Cyclops and young Jean Grey in X-Men: Apocalypse, throwing out names like Chloe Grace Moretz, Hailee Steinfeld and Timothee Chalamet.  However, earlier this month we got a new report and not a single one of those names made the short list.  Just a few weeks ago, Singer narrowed it down to Taron Egerton, Jamie Blackley and Tye Sheridan for Cyclops, Sophie Turner and Saoirse Ronan for Jean Grey, and Alexandra Shipp and Zendaya Coleman for young Storm.  Now the casting process for those young mutants is over and Singer just revealed who he chose for all three roles.

Mudds Sheridan snagged the role of young Cyclops, Game of Thrones’ Turner will portray young Jean Grey and Shipp will take the part of young Storm.  Here’s Singer’s Twitter announcement if you want to check it out:

As much as I enjoyed Egerton’s performance in Kingsman: The Secret Service, Sheridan’s already got an incredibly impressive body of work.  He’s built his career on very intimate, character-driven material so it’ll be interesting to see how he adapts to the uber big budget, superhero realm.

As for young Jean Grey, you can never go wrong with Ronan, but it’s about time we see Turner play someone other than Sansa Stark.  She does have Mary Shelley’s Monster coming up, but clearly X-Men: Apocalypse is on another level.  Lastly we’ve got Shipp who you may recognize from the Lifetime biopic Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B.  I never watched it nor have I seen the Nickelodeon show House of Anubis or any of her TV appearances so I can’t comment on her work, but there’s no doubt that X-Men could be a game changer for the up-and-comer.

X-Men: Apocalypse is expected to begin shooting in April and the film is scheduled to hit theaters on May 27, 2016.
