Hugh Jackman Confirmed to Return for X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

     December 19, 2012

Last month, we reported that Hugh Jackman was in talks to reprise his role as Wolverine in Bryan Singer‘s X-Men: Days of Future Past.  Singer, who recently joined Twitter, has been working the site like a pro by keeping fans in the loop for the highly-anticipated superhero film.  Last night, he tweeted “I would officially like to welcome @RealHughJackman to the cast of #Xmen Days of Future Past. Very excited! More to come…”  Singer previously tweeted that Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen were poised to return as Professor X and Magneto, respectively.  The “more to come…” hints that other X-Men from the previous films might be on the way.    However, these returning mutants might only amount to cameos.  According to THR, “For one, Jackman and the others will appear mostly in scenes depicting an alternate dystopic future, so pay and time commitments are not substantial.”

Hit the jump for more.  The film also stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicholas HoultX-Men: Days of Future Past starts filming next year.

For those unfamiliar with the comics, “Days of Future Past” refers to a 1980s arc written by Chris Claremont.  In the comics, mutants had been nearly wiped out by giant robots called Sentinals (you caught a glimpse of them in the danger room in X-Men: The Last Stand) after a prominent politician was assassinated by evil mutants led by Mystique.  In order to change the past, the mutant Kitty Pride mentally switched bodies with her younger self in order to help stop the assassination.

I doubt the new film will closely resemble the comics since we still don’t have a Kitty Pride (there’s been no mention of Ellen Page returning or recasting the role).  However, Days of Future Past will likely include a post-apocalyptic future that will interact with the mutants in the 1960s.

I just noticed the sign in the back said “Marv’s Beer”. Marv being director Matthew Vaughn’s nickname.

Hugh Jackman is the soul of the X-Men movies.

Great news! Jackman has made an appearance in every X-Men movie so far. Glad they aren’t breaking the trend. Can’t wait! Now bring back James Marsden.

This movie could be great. Remember the amazing opening of X2 with Nightcrawler? Just a reminder.

I know I’m probably going to be ripped apart for this one, but this film is really starting to worry me. I like Singer, even though Returns was a bit abysmal and Jack the Giant Slayer looks atrocious, but I fear he’s trying far too much to make this the X3 he turned down in the first place…

I get the Days of Future past story, I know WHY the characters are returning, but I was really looking forward to a continuation of what Vaugn had done with first class, I wanted to see THAT cast back, in another movie around that time frame. Shoehorning in every original trilogy (really, did I just use that phrase for XMEN?) mutant is feeling very forced and is going to be weird, I fear. McKellen is brilliant, Patrick Stewart is amazing, but equally are Fassbender and McAvoy.

I hope I’m proven wrong, but The Last Stand left a very, VERY cheesy taste in our mouths, it wasn’t a good film, even remotely.
