X-Men: Days of Future Past is starting to reach The Amazing Spider-Man 2 levels of over-promotion.  The movie is still six weeks away, but Fox is still doing their teasers-for-teasers thing by releasing a sneak peek of a clip that will air during the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday.  Unsurprisingly, the clip features Jennifer Lawrence being badass, and while I have no complaints about that, this is a 10-second preview of a clip that will be 60 seconds at most.  Additionally, Entertainment Weekly has given Days of Future Past the cover to the magazine’s “Summer Movie Preview” issue because up until this point, EW had not covered any movie that’s coming out this summer.

Hit the jump to check out the sneak peek for the clip and the EW cover. The film stars Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Peter Dinklage, Nicholas Hoult, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Evan Peters, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, Halle Berry, Lucas Till, Omar Sy, Adan Canto, Daniel Cudmore, and Bingbing FanX-Men: Days of Future Past opens in 2D and 3D on May 23rd.

Here’s the official synopsis for X-Men: Days of Future Past:

The ultimate X-Men ensemble fights a war for the survival of the species across two time periods in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. The beloved characters from the original “X-Men” film trilogy join forces with their younger selves from “X-Men: First Class,” in an epic battle that must change the past – to save our future.

I know I say this with pretty much every Xmen promotional material article on this site, but I really can’t stand how Mystic is so prominent in all of it. This movie doesn’t feel like it is in anyway about her. She is just s supporting mutant to a story that I would have believed focuses on the professors and the magnetos and wolverine.

    • bidi

it’s because she’s played by Jennifer Lawrence, an insanely popular actress at the moment. and because she’s naked the entire movie, only covered in blue paint. i agree that they show her too much, but i think they show Hugh Jackman too much as well. it should focus on the Xaviers and the Magnetos

to the dismay of fans, Lawrence’s Mystique is actually wearing a bodysuit, she’s not nude/painted the Romijn’s Mystique was

She’s wearing a bodysuit on her breasts, but her chest and stomach is just painted.

Why isn’t Romijn’s playing Mystique anymore?

      • Leo Spaceman

It was a younger recasting of everybody involved. Also Mystique in the future timeline was depowered (maybe, still not sure if Last Stand is Canon anymore). But Jennifer Lawrence got cast for First Class, then Jennifer Lawrence became big S**t and was contracted to several Xmen movies so Jennifer Lawrence got brought back for Days of Future Past.

      • Leo Spaceman

Ya, I know that its about Jennifer Lawrence, its hard not to know that given how she is on the front page in some way or another of virtually every site that follows anything Hollywood.

    • The Flobbit

You mentioned the Professors and Magnetos, and I just want to throw out there that Michael Fassbender, James MacAvoy, Patrick Stewart, and Ian McKellen are some of the most talented actors alive. Just to change the topic from Mystique…

      • Leo Spaceman

Which is why the promotional material should be focusing on them.

Well, her actions is what starts the conflict in the movie.

      • Leo Spaceman

You need a spoiler alert on that. There is absolutely no mention of anything like that in any of the trailers, or virtually anywhere.

If its from the comics, you have to realize not many people have read the comics. So far the trailers are doing a great job of setting up the film without giving very much of the plot away at all.

      • tobi

Well Hugh Jackman did a trailer breakdown recently and alluded to this fact.

      • Leo Spaceman

Then I apologize, I didn’t know. I have only seen the two trailers for this, and that is all I intend to see before the film.

You know i scrolled down here to comment the exact same thing, Mystique is was too prominantly advertised on these magazine covers AND official movie posters, i wouldn’t mind if she was the top 3 character (on the poster) but i bet she’ll barely be in the majority of the movie, considering the relationship between Xavier and Magneto and also Wolverine. I totally agree with you. I can’t imagine anyone is watching this movie purely for Jennifer Lawerence.

People may not plan to see this film purely for Jennifer Lawerence
but she has legions of fans from the Hunger Games who may not
be inclined to see an X-Men film for the Xaviers’ and Magneto’s
but will now see the film because they can’t possibly not know
that Lawerence is in the film.

Fox would be fools to ignore such a factor in their marketing that could push up interest in this film among young females.

Example,Captain America TWS broke down audience wise as 64 percent male,36 percent female. Sure the film is making a lot of money but how much more could it be making if it could have
        brought in more women?

DOFP has a cast member who is insanely popular with that female demo that could make the difference of tens of millions of dollars in opening weekend grosses.

Agreed with Dr. Spaceman. This marketing is completely ruining my interest.

Sorry, wrote that comment on an Android Tablet, Google AutoCorrected it for me. They don’t like Mystique either.

Finally a promo image I can get behind. This cover is better than the many posters they’ve made.

  • blkyank

You can’t please anybody when it comes to fanboys. For the longest time the biggest complaint against DOFP was the lack of promotion and the first trailer which didn’t give us any “money shots”. Now Matt says the film is at an “ASM 2 level of over promotion” WTF??

This is just like the complaints against MOS when the first trailers didn’t really show anything. People were complaining that the first trailer had to really blow people away lots of footage and the film would suffer from a tame trailer. When the epic
later trailers came out,the fans started complaining about the film being spoiled.

The same thing is going on with DOFP.Everybody was underwhelmed with the first trailer and predicted disaster, now everybody yells about over promotion.

    • The Flobbit

Lesson number one: fanboys will always find something to gripe about.
      Always.
