Bryan Singer Talks about Removing Rogue and the Mystery of Wolverine’s Claws in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

With a series of twenty-five covers, Empire Magazine had a huge X-Men: Days of Future Past blow-out for their latest issue, and it provided plenty of interesting tidbits about the upcoming film.  A couple months ago, we reported that Rogue (Anna Paquin) wouldn’t be making the movie’s final cut.  At the time, director Bryan Singer said, “Through the editing process, the sequence became extraneous.  It’s a really good sequence and it will probably end up on the DVD so people can see it. But like many things in the editing process, it was an embarrassment of riches and it was just one of the things that had to go.”  Rogue is still featured on one of the twenty-five covers, and Singer tells Empire that “It does not mean that we won’t see her in the film,” and he hopes “to make the sequence available on the DVD as she was quite wonderful in it. She is an important part of the X-Men family.”

Hit the jump for Singer trying to explain a detail that’s been bothering some X-Men fans.  For more X-Men news, click here for new details on X-Men: Apocalypse and click here for new details on a Gambit movie.  X-Men: Days of Future Past opens in 3D on May 23rd.

[Spoilers ahead if you haven't seen The Wolverine]

You may recall that at the end of The Wolverine, Logan’s adamantium claws were cut off, and the bone claws grew back through the stubs in the adamantium coating.  However, as you can see in the trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past and on the Empire cover, he has his adamantium claws again.  So how did future Wolverine get his metal claws back?  Singer is somewhat vague on the matter, telling Empire that perhaps Magneto could “reconstitute the adamantium claws… [Wolverine] has a different relationship with Magneto, and perhaps Magneto could forge them.”  I’m not sure if we’ll see that in the movie or if Singer is just cutting off nit-pickers at the pass.  Nevertherless, it’s still a nice touch to have Magneto put adamantium into Wolverine’s body when it was the supervillain who ripped out the indestructible metal in the comics.

Well that’s good enough for me!

That image of Magneto ripping out the adamantium from the comics (and the cool hologram that was on that comic’s cover) are still burned into my mind from when I was a kid. I always hoped we’d see it in the cartoon, but that image still haunts me.

    • YodaRocks

      I don’t think it’s Magneto who’s ripping out adamantium from Wolverine’s body.

      • Lex Walker

Are you serious? Did you not read the above comic book page? It’s Magneto.

      • YodaRocks

My bad. I read it wrong. I had to Google it to know for certain that its Magneto. But honestly, just going by the page long comic strip in the article, it isn’t clear as to who exactly is ripping it.

Well Professor X does refer to the person as “Magnus”, and that’s his petname, or whatever, for Magneto.

If you look at this and can’t tell Magneto is ripping out his adimantium, then you you should get a CATScan or an MRI or something.

      Epic lines too.

Oh yeah, My favorite was one that had Wolverine Fighting Omega Red.

The Rogue character was poorly written, or poorly acted in all the previous movies anyways. They turned someone who was strong into someone who was a meek timid person with a frail ego, then into a love interest of another character who ended up getting dumped because Ellen Page is way less depressing to be around “oh no one can touch me, blah blah blah”, honestly Anna Paquin was a poor choice for character. Bryan Singer butchered the Xmen from the start so really who cares what cuts are made.

pre TDK, X2 was considered the greatest comic book movie ever made, by critics and fans alike, but I suppose your right and most other people are wrong and singer butchered them…..

      • Mike

Post TDK? Or Pre-TDK? Because X2 came out before TDK, Pre-TDK there was Spiderman and Iron man, and if anyone thinks X2 was better than those two they are extremely delusional. Compared to other comic book movies Pre-TDK lets see Hulk, Elektra, Daredevil, Fantastic Four, Ghost Rider… so yeah saying it’s the best wouldn’t be saying too much because most comic book movies suck.

So yeah I stand by original statement of Bryan Singer butchered the X-men movies.

      • 7992

‘extremely delusional’ in your opinion, most people love the xmen films and think singer did a good job, but like I say I suppose most people are wrong and you of course are right

Fox is really banking on xmen days of future past to be a hit. It must be a hit. Xmen days of future past will be the most expensive superhero film ever made with a price tag of 250 million dollars without marketing cost. A quick look to the xmen franchise tells you why it’s a big risk sure to backfire
The first xmen made more 150 million domestically which adjusted for inflation it’s almost 190 million dollars. X2 made a little more than 200 million dollar and the third xmen was the peak of the franchise at more than 230 million dollar. After this turd, box office for the xmen origin the wolverine shows that audience was tired of the xmen crap. One can argue that many circumstances made xmen origin wolverine a disappointment. The movie leaked beforehand, it was badly written, it features characters from the bottom of the well of the xmen comic book universe and it was directed by someone who doesn’t know how to direct commercial flare.
Fair enough, then comes xmen first class while an improvement from the wolverine wasn’t an hit with the public. Sure it made more than 140 million domestically, but it posted lackluster dvd sales. Outside of the theaters, the movie didnt have a life. Its DVDs are sitting on shelves collecting dust waiting to be rented or bought. Foreign box office receipt was a little more than 200 million dollars which itself was a massive disappointment even if it was better than wolverine and the first xmen movie. Maybe it was the cast as none was a box office star. Whatever
Then past year came the forgettable the wolverine movie. In a summer full of gem, the movie came and went. It wasn’t a flop but it wasn’t a hit either. The movie had no audience outside of the neckbearded fanboys. For the wolverine fox thankfully didnt spend much money on it compared to other xmen movies. While the movie wasn’t talked about in America, it was a big hit in select fireign markets.
As you can see, since xmen 3 (which should have been the franchise last stand), the box office has gradually dwindled. Xmen is not an hot franchise among the superhero landscape. The franchise hasn’t even hit 300 million dollars aboard!!! And the last 3 movies had little life outside of theaters.
But somehow that didnt stop fox to spend more than 250 million dollars in this lone movie. The movie will flop, because no way it makes more than 600 million dollars worldwide to break even.

Universal is really banking on Spike Lee’s Oldboy to be a hit. It must be a hit. Oldboy will be the most expensive interacial film ever made with a price tag of $30 million dollars without marketing cost. A quick look to other mixed race films tells you why it’s a big risk sure to backfire
The first film Roots made more 1.5 million domestically which adjusted for inflation it’s almost 1.9 million dollars. Roots Ch.2 made a little more than 2.0 million dollar and the third Roots (also known as Amistad) was the peak of the franchise at more than 2.3 million dollar. After this turd, box office for the Do the Right Thing shows that audience were tired of the Spike Lee. One can argue that many circumstances made Do the Right Thing a disappointment. The movie leaked beforehand in back alleys of Harlem, it was badly written, it features characters from the bottom of the well of the African American talent and it was directed by someone who tried to also star in it – who does he think he is Ben Stiller?
Fair enough, then, after changing his name to Keenan Ivory Waynes, comes Don’t Be a Menace 2 the Society while Drinking your Juice Hood while an improvement from the Do the Right Thing wasn’t an hit with the public. Sure it made more than 1.4 million domestically, but it posted lackluster vhs sales. Outside of the theaters, the movie didnt have a life. Its VHSs are sitting on shelves, along w Pooty Tang, collecting dust waiting to be rented or bought. Foreign box office receipt was a little more than 2 million dollars which itself was a massive disappointment even if it was better than Do the Right Thing and Don’t Be a Menace 2 the Society while Drinking your Juice Hood. Maybe it was the cast as none was a box office star. Whatever
Then past decade came the forgettable the White Chicks movie. In a summer full of gem, the movie came and went. It wasn’t a flop but it wasn’t a hit either. The movie had no audience outside of the neckbearded fanboys. For White Chicks Fox thankfully didnt spend much money on it compared to other mixed race movies. why do people think its cool rip on directors who have made mistakes, I prefer to judge a man by his merits. when you go against the consensus of most people and say this is shit, he is shit, he ruined everything, and things akin to that, it doesn’t make you seem intelligent, it makes you look desperate to be noticed.

The whole thing with the claws was stupid, both in the film AND the comic. Adamantium is indestructible. Look up that word in the dictionary.

    • Christopher Ebert

Adamantium is indestructible, Magneto didn’t destroy it, he removed it from his body.

  • Redjester

The problem with the films from this point on is kind of an embarrassment of riches as you have two EXCELLENT casts (one in the 70′s and one in the present/future), and as you can’t make every movie about time travel, it means they’ll have to drop one of the two casts in full at some point in the near future.

Either way, they better bring back Cyclops. I mean, he’s the effing leader of the X-Men. It really shouldn’t be that difficult to make that character work.

  • Strong Enough

they probably forgot and trying to save face

  • Yo Daddy

Rogue sucked. As she is/was in the movies, she will not be missed

  • Rock n Rollllll

Unless she steals Ms Marvel’s powers i AM NOT f**king interested. The way she has been portrayed thus far makes her completely worthless.
And another thing………Its not like Magneto can create new claws for Wolverine. Thats a super dumb concept. Magneto only manipulates metal, he doesnt have the power to create it
