Fox has released the first trailer for X-Men: First Class.  As far as teaser trailers go, I think this one looks pretty cool. Michael Fassbender looks like he owns the role of Magneto and I like that it doesn’t try to throw too many special effects in your face. Also, I like the darker tone they’re establishing with Magneto making a dude stab himself and the dark cloud of the Cold War overshadowing the narrative.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Directed by Matthew Vaughn from a story by Bryan Singer, X-Men: First Class stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, January Jones, Rose Byrne, Kevin Bacon, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, and Oliver Platt.  The film is set to open June 3rd.

Here’s the official synopsis for X-Men: First Class:

X-MEN: FIRST CLASS charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga, and reveals a secret history of famous global events.  Before mutants had revealed themselves to the world, and before Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Not archenemies, they were instead at first the closest of friends, working together with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to prevent nuclear Armageddon.  In the process, a grave rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men.

The film stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Rose Byrne, January Jones, Oliver Platt, and Kevin Bacon.  Matthew Vaughn (“Kick-Ass”) directs, and the producers are Lauren Shuler Donner, Simon Kinberg and Bryan Singer.  Singer, who helmed the acclaimed blockbusters “X-Men” and “X2,” wrote the story for X-MEN: FIRST CLASS.

  1. This trailer really tells us nothing except that Prof. X and Magneto are young. I’m looking forward to the film, but the trailer was pretty meh.

  2. X-Men vs. the Soviets? JFK’s ghost is going to climb off of Marilyn Monroe’s ghost and protest this movie opening day.

I have never yawned so wildly as I did during that trailer.

This wreaks of the pile that was ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’.

Bad. Pointless. Looks hastily thrown together. No substance. A few peeks from characters of good X-Men movies.

This is the drawback of critically acclaimed, well-made comic book flicks. For every Spider-Man or The Dark Knight, you get five weak ass movies that pull at the fanboy heartstrings.

I realize you can’t put a lot of stock into a 90-second trailer. But based on what I’ve read and seen, it’s not hard to do the math on this. It’s going to suck on wheels.

As the great Jeff Albertson once said, “there is no emoticon for what I’m feeling.”

  3. There are too many X-Men movies. They should never have made Wolverine. Now it’s tough for me to take this one seriously.

  4. Wow! That looked really good!
Both Fassbender and McAvoy looked really good here.
But, you know, it’s only a first trailer.
Nobody knows how it will turn out. And the same goes for Captain America, Thor and Green Lantern. Nobody knows.

      • Sorry about the double post (and having to leave this 3rd explanation post). The website said it didn’t accept the security code the first time so I re-entered my comment.

  5. i really liked the trailer. i have a good feeling about this movie, matthew vaughn is a very good director in my opinion, layer cake is the proof of it, hell, the soundtrack in the trailer really reminded me of layer cake.

  6. don’t know why so many people are saying this looks bad, Its from a story by and produced by bryan singer and directed by Matthew Vaughn, the same man who left x-men 3 because he knew it wasn’t gonna be as good as 1 and 2(instead of just making it and rolling in the cash) and who criticized X3 for not having enough heart and emotion, and hes also the guy who made kick-ass one of last years best movies(despite what some people who were expecting a scary movie style spoof said). So with all of this in mind i think this movie is going to be fantastic. You can already tell with the lack of showing off special effects in the trailer that its going to be loads better than X3 and wolverine.

    • that’s actually a good point… i was noticing that too… the lack of special effects… and it could indeed be because there are not much to show, and the main focus is on the characters… : )

    • Just to clarify, Bryan Singer left the X-Men franchise for the more lucrative (in theory) Superman Returns, not because he knew X-Men 3 wouldn’t be good.

Side note, this trailer makes a pretty big mistake, showing clips from good movies to remind us that this will also be good. Which almost definitely means it won’t be. They’re borrowing someone else’s credibility, and that’s a bad sign.

      • He wasn’t talking about Brian Singer choosing to leave. It is known that Brian Singer decided to leave X-Men for Superman, but Matthew Vaughn was initial supposed to replace Singer and helm X3, that is who he is talking about leaving. Unsurprisingly, Fox wanted him to make a cookie cutout of a film in an extremely short amount of time. Vaughn left X3, and Ratner took over.
Yes, X-Men: First Class is also on an extremely tight schedule, and it seems silly that he would pass up X3 because it was rushed and then go ahead and decide to direct X-Men: First Class, possible even more rushed; but he decided to do so because Fox told him to create his own film and not an unoriginal film thrown together by a couple of executives who think they know how to make an intelligent, original film.

  7. looks good. I’m more interested in this one, than in the thor movie… good to see they’re trying to give it some connection to singer’s movies, and beast looks better than expected.

let’s just hope it makes us forget how bad that wolverine origins p.o.s. was…..

  8. This trailer makes the movie look well done, as a trailer should. That being said, why are there so many people talking negative about it. How does it look hastily thrown together? Watch it in HD, it looks well-done at worst. Will it be a good movie? Who knows. But there is nothing to suggest this isn’t a well put-together movie at this point. So many negative comments, it’s just silly. If you want to cry about something, go hit up a politics forum, not an entertainment forum about a movie that you’d seen 1.5 minutes of material. Seriously, being unwarrantedly negative is getting old. Hit up the TF: ROTF website and complain because it deserves it, hit up the Wolverine: Origins website because it deserves it. Say that you’re not into this movie, fine, say you’re going to wait and see, fine. Don’t say something dumb like, “I couldn’t finish the trailer this looks so crappy.” It’s just a waste of your time.

  9. I think it’s an “ok” trailer that shows promise, doesn’t give that much away, but lets us know they still have a lot of work to do to improve the final product (Havok’s beam anyone? Azazel…).

For me the key here is running time for the movie. There is a lot to be developed: although Charles and Erik will be the focus of attention, I don’t think Vaughn and Singer will let important characters like the whole Fire Club, Moira (and her connection to the CIA), or the White Queen (not to mention the gifted youngsters) dilute itselves into the movie.

Hoping for the best and looking forward to it!! :D

  10. Matthew Vaughn has yet to make a horrible movie (LAYER CAKE, STARDUST, KICK ASS) so I’m putting my money on this film rocking the summer box office. BTW, What’s the name of the song being played in the X-MEN: FIRST CLASS Trailer? Want to download it badly!

  11. I like the tone of the trailer, I agree that showing the older films seems cheap. Now everyone is imagining those actors in the original parts and is instantly comparing them to the young actors. To me it doesn’t look like they encompassed that 1950′s-1960′s feel enough. The costumes look dated but the shots from the film here look like modern day. Something feels wrong.

  12. Maybe that’s Vaughn’s name put on (who produced great G.Ritchie movies, made really good Layer Cake, and a somewhat guilty pleasure of mine that’s Kick-Ass) but Bryan Singer studio hackmenship is written all over it.

The X-Men will never get a wink of fresh air so long people like Singer think they own it. Aronofsky will soon get ahold of this.

And the Soviets are a threat/conspiracy, uuu that’s totally dark , we never ever rehashed the general theme that was in the previous movies.

  13. Come on people. The trailer was really good. You have to get it into little pea brain heads that the movieverse and comicverse are separate. just like there are so many different comics about one same team or person. The comics are there, they are forever the real thing. You cant change that. Its original. Just appreciate the fact that they are bringing the characters we love to life. Granted some movies are just not worthy *cough* the last stand *cough* wolverine, and many others. but i trust in Matthew Vaughn. Hopefully he wont train wreck this too, but look what he did with kick ass. great movie. fingers crossed.

  14. This will be the best comic book flick of the summer. Thor may be a sleeper waiting to be ‘unleashed’. I like the understated feel you can feel. They didn’t rush the script nearly like the production, so I’m sure they made a flick that will stand it’s own.

Green Lantern I’m very optimistic on.

The shot of Magneto when he’s in his outfit/suit – it’s a big daddy ‘shot’ from the rear with the same closed feel. This movie is going to be like a high end car. All the crap you really don’t need, but conveniently tucked away for maximum enjoyment.

      • Isn’t Mystique also his mother (she’s in this movie too)? If I’m remembering correctly, she was married to Baron Christian Wagner but b/c he was infertile, she had affairs with other people.

  15. I can’t wait to see HOW MANY potholes there are in this. Like hmm, Why does Dr. X have an accent?

There will be MANY many more.

    • Well, this is supposed to be a “prequel”, so perhaps they are trying to keep in line with Patrick Stewart’s accent (which is British) in the “later” movies? (and it’s *Professor* X, not Dr.)

  16. Wow some of you are really depressed from x3 and wolverine. Don’t worry about the future of x-men, this looks good and Darren Afonsky will fix Wolverine

  17. y does everyone hate wolverine ovie so uch I thought it was pretty sweet with all the back story about him, yeh the ending fight was kinda cheesey but the rest was sweet. I totally agree x3 was straight beat, I was laughing at the whole movie, it was rediculously corny
