Zac Efron has shared a pair of new behind-the-scenes image from his upcoming Ted Bundy biopic, revealing The Big Bang Theory star Jim Parson as Larry Simpson, lead prosecutor in Bundy’s trial and the man who eventually put the grotesque serial killer behind bars, and Kaya Scodelario as Bundy’s mysterious ex-wife Carol Anne Boone. Extravagantly titled with the headline-killer Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile, the Bundy biopic stars Efron as the murderer, rapist and necrophile, who has become a bit of a national obsession since his 1976 trial and subsequent execution.
As I mentioned when we got a first peak at Efron’s Bundy, I’m not super into this sexy serial killer trope and the idea of a teen heartthrob taking on the role is especially off-putting (check out the adoring comments on the pictures below for a glimpse at why that makes me uncomfortable), but there’s a pretty exciting creative team behind this one that piques my interest.
Joe Berlinger, who previously investigated the infamous West Memphis Three trial with the Paradise Lost documentary trilogy is set to direct, with Diary of a Teenage Girl and This Is the End cinematographer Brandon Trost shooting the film. Written by Michael Werwie, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile approaches Bundy’s story from the point of view of his longtime live-in girlfriend Elizabeth Kloepfer (Okja‘s Lily Collins) during the years that he hid his gruesome crimes from her. John Malcovich is also set to star in the film as Judge Edward Cowart, who presided over the serial killer’s 1979 trial and ultimately sentenced him to death.
Extremely Wicked is currently in production. Check out the latest images from the set below, followed by a few more images Efron’s shared over the last few weeks.
