Zach Galifianakis is in talks to star opposite Ryan Reynolds in an adaptation of the Dark Horse comic R.I.P.D. The initialism stands for “Rest in Peace Department,” and the property centers on dead police officers who patrol the underworld.  Reynolds will play Nick Cruz, recently murdered and out for revenge.  Galifianakis would play Roy Powell, whom producer Neal Moritz described as “a gunslinger who’s been dead for hundreds of years.”  Robert Schwentke (Red) is on board as director.  According to 24 Frames, Universal hopes to get R.I.P.D. in front of cameras this summer when Reynolds has a hole in his otherwise very busy schedule.  Reynolds himself implied he might be too busy to star in both R.I.P.D. and Deadpool.  Does forward movement on R.I.P.D. reflect poorly on the prospects of a Deadpool movie?

Galifianakis will next be seen in the May 26 release The Hangover Part II, followed by an appearance as “Hobo Joe” in The Muppet Movie November 23.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of R.I.P.D.

Here’s the official synopsis via Dark Horse:

Welcome to the Rest In Peace Department — the devoted, yet dead, officers of divine law enforcement “patrolling the deadbeat…reporting to one boss.” Yep — THAT boss. Nick Cruz was murdered by an unknown assailent, at the height of his personal and professional life. Now he’s traded a hundred years of service to the R.I.P.D. in exchange for a shot at finding who killed him. Unfortunately his search will take him to Hell and back — literally!

I don’t believe we’ve seen Galifianakis like this before — a role  that harnesses his inherent weirdness for the purposes of action-comedy.  Shades of Seth Rogen in The Green Hornet, another Moritz production.  Will tops my list of Most Anticipated Galifianakis Films until it reaches theaters, but I’m very intrigued by the possibility of gunslinging, mustachioed Galfianakis spouting one-liners in a cowboy hat and brown duster.
