The Bearded One, a.k.a. Bo, knows funny. Zach Galifianakis is nearing a deal to star in “It’s Kind of a Funny Story,” the next film from “Half-Nelson” writer-directors Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden. If he signs, “Story” would be the fourth film to feature Galifianakis coming out in the next few years, not counting his small role in Jason Reitman’s much talked about “Up in the Air.” He has already started filming Todd Phillips’ “Due Date” and is scheduled to shoot both Jay Roach’s “Dinner with Schmucks” and the sequel “Hangover 2″ (with Phillips again) next year. If you want to know more about Galifianakis’ newest project, sit yourself down between two ferns and hit the jump.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Story” is about a teenage boy who is sent to a mental institution after struggling with depression. There, he is put in the adult ward where he meets a variety of unbalanced adults (see: Galifianakis, Zach) as well as a teenage girl to be played by Emma Roberts. Incidentally, Roberts,who is attempting to move on from her “Nancy Drew” days and establish herself as a serious dramatic actress, is signed onto several interesting projects and could become a household name before long. “Story,” which is based on Ned Vizzini’s young adult novel, is a little different from some of the other movies that Galifianakis is currently attached to. The film is backed by Focus Features and already has critical-acclaimed writer-directors to its credit. A Fall 2010 release date in anticipation of the awards season does not seem out of the question.
Galifianakis also appeared in 2007′s “Into the Wild” so this will not be his first dramatic film. Even so, it may be the film that cements his “Hangover”-fueled star power. If he is able to score a one-two punch with “Due Date” and “It’s Kind of a Funny Story,” let the reign of the Galf (you heard it hear first!) begin.

Half-Nelson was one of the best movies of the last decade, imo. That had more to do with the performance of the two leads than anything else. Galifianakis is one of the most overrated “comedians” working today. I’m waiting on his long awaited emperor has no clothes moment due any day now. Not only is he unfunny (particularly his stand up) but he has a weird sense of entitlement – as though the audience owes him laughs – I find really insufferable. Check out his performance clips on youtube – there is one in there where is has one audience member join him on stage so he can berate her for fifteen minutes. The woman isn’t the sharpest knife, granted, but the whole scene is cringe inducing, primarily because Galifianakis chooses to lord it over her.
